I had the idea for this comic the night before an O-chem exam. Guess that goes to show you where my priorities lie.So I've noticed that the show's been kind of nice about giving Rainbow Dash things over time -- way back in Season 2, ~RizCifra drew this up after we realized how not alone Dash was anymore with Tank. Then "Sleepless in Ponyville" aired, and take that, Faust -- Dash's gonna try and be a responsible big sister. That said, we STILL haven't seen any mention of pegasus families for either Rainbow, Fluttershy, or Scootaloo (and I'm pretending the middle satisfies herself with bears or something for the sake of a joke), and the episode slots to explore those things are running out.
I can't say I WANT the show to go into their histories, though. Making up stuff like this is, in an attempt to get me labeled something derogatory, fun. I personally believe Rainbow Dash comes from a very happy family who she can count on when times get tough, but I just had to draw this first.
Thank you for reading. I'd love to know your thoughts on this, especially from the art angle if you could spare some critique!

Well... guess it's clear now that the parents are dead.
New episode nailed it practically. When the whole Apple Family reunited, but we didn't got to see their parents...? Pretty obvious.

Upon closer inspection, Shining Armor looks positively evil giving that noogie to Twilight. Not sure how to feel about that. Lucky for me, the rest of the comic made me feel sad to hide to the confusion. Great work!

Yeah, he does. It's kind of hard to see, but Twilight doesn't seem to be minding him all that much, though XD Subtlety's lost when you shrink things down, I guess.

Note: both Dash and FS moved to Ponyville a few "years" (time is reeeeeally fuzzy in the show) before Twi did. They're both from Cloudsdale. Meaning their parents and siblings are most likely still there.
While we didn't meet them in the ep that went there, they might be introed later. (or maybe Dash and FS went to see them before the rest of the mane 6 arrived. or something)

I'm sorry the fifth panel didn't work out for you. I put a lot of time into that one just 'cause of all the ponies that were in it, and I'm personally proud of my effort here. How would I go about making it better for next time, though?

I'm sorry for the vague comment, I like to be specific. I still can't put my finger on it; the eyes, the proportions, the perspective, too crowded... maybe I'm just seeing something that isn't there? I wish I could be more helpful.

You're right on the perspective bit -- Rainbow Dash isn't well positioned, Pinkie's a tad on the big side, and Twilight's family is rather small compared to the other ponies. I also wish I could've made the bear bigger, or that Inkie Pie's hoof wasn't laid over her father's. I reasoned overwhelming Rainbow Dash with this wall of families was worth some sacrifices in spacing, but I do agree that I could have laid the panel out a bit more expertly.
As for your other complaints, I'm going to have to say I like the way I do eyes, though some of them get a little awkward depending on the angle of their head. Same thing with proportions -- they're all right, but don't always make sense "anatomy" wise. Guess all there is to do with that is practice.
I appreciate you taking the time trying to help me figure out what I could improve with my art. Just... remember that things like "I think you missed" with no qualifications tend to be less helpful

I would prefer they don't. It's unnecessary to establish every characters family. My guess as to why they have yet to reveal Scootaloo's guardians in because they either haven't decided what races they should be, or they want to use it address an issue such as widow/widower, divorce, poverty, embarrassment, etc.

No offence, but I find people who exaggerate and write fan fics about thins like this to be annoying (If you do write fan fics about this). I don't insult them or anything, nor do I hate them. But they think that they're right out of some narcissistic reasoning.
It doesn't have to be necessary to introduce every family member, but they can mention them or something like that. And they wouldn't show any sort of thing such as widows or divorce, or split parents, or anything like that because it's a kids show. They're trying to make some sort of idealistic world for them. Plus parents would go off if they did.

On the one hand, I'd agree with you that giving the pegasi conventional families would be safe and expected for a kid's show, and deviating from that standard would require a very deft writer's touch.
On the other hand, FiM didn't get where it is today by staying within "safe" boundaries. Faust envisioned Scootaloo as handicapped and AJ's parents as passed away, so the fruit's there for the writers to pluck if they're feeling adventurous.
And Equestria is far from an idealistic world -- you have everyday folks like Gilda and Trixie and Diamond Tiara in there mixed with the more fantastic villains like Discord and Chrysalis. Sure, Equestria seems a happier place than Earth, but that doesn't make the place any more safe.

And it is an idealistic world. There's no mention of death at all, the constant obstacles that they go through, such as villains, are just a one time thing with no draw backs now that they are gone. I mean, kids say they want to be super heroes because they have super powers and fight villains for adventure. They have no worry to fail because with kids shows, the good guys always win. So yes, it is an idealistic world because things work out in the end. ALWAYS.

I don't write fanfics, I was just speculating. The embarrassing thing has been done before like Spinelli from Recess. I think they could do poverty too; example: All the fillies at school have some new toy, but she doesn't have one, because her parents can't buy her one, and she doesn't want to admit it to her friends.
Again, it could also just be the writers haven't yet agreed as to what personalities and races the characters parents should be.

And I'm kind of with you with regards to whether or not the show should present pegafamilies or not -- but perhaps for a different reason that might offend your conversation partner up there. I love creating stuff and coming up for explanations regarding why I think the characters in the show are the way they are, and every question about someone's past the show answers is another question I can't really explore without going AU. That's the fun for me in this fandom, really.

I fantasize (beyond daydreaming) all the time, so creating headcanon is a necessity for me, as I explore a fantasy of me in Equestria. Sometimes my fantasies are pseudocanon, where the real Equestria is different than the one depicted in the show, similar to how movies and tv shows depicting phantasmal creatures do it in a way from the classic fairy tales.

Then Dash decided to visit Scootaloo for Christmas, and they curled up by the fireplace and quietly read a Daring Do novel together.
And Rainbow Dash didn't feel so alone anymore.
