Description
This was made as a favor to a good friend Dhui, who despite being a super cool artist, wanted my help with the comic drawing process. Its fairly rough, but I do hope that these helps people, do give me your feedback, as I hope to make a couple more of these.
NOTE:For people that don't have fancy Photoshop, GIMP, available Here for free and has all the same things that are used in this tutorial. Its what I used to use before I got PS

That sounded better in my head! Lol.
But yeah, you basically described my noobiness to a T there.

it made me laugh, so I guess it still goes to you, haha!
And no worries, I'm still kinda mediocre myself, we all just need to keep on pushing!

I think I'll try some of these processes in the future! Admittedly, I've always had an issue with panel composition and, well... organization. ^^'

just remember that organized doesn't mean not messy (oxymoron much?) the process needs to be messy when it needs to be and cleans itself up when it needs to. Its all a matter of finding your comfort zone

All right. I'll keep that in mind.

Bah, I can't find a Color Range tool in my program, PSE 8. Is there any other way you could possibly do that step?

CountDraggula In reply to SilverWingStorm [2012-02-24 22:05:32 +0000 UTC]
to be totally frank, I've never used it. But if you're just doing the pc edits, then they can be done in GIMP, which is free and can do all these things. [link] I used gimp before I upgraded, and everything I do, can be done in it.
There may be a PSE8 way of doing this, but I simply don't know the program that well, sorry.

I actually found a way around that, but now I think there's no way to add a layer mask, sooo DX

if worst comes to worst, just adjust the levels until the blacks are good and the bg colors are not turning black, I like the overlay because I don't have to mess with sliders, but this works really good too

Hey, this seems helpful! Just a few questions:
How do you get your inking to be so smooth? My lines usually end up kinda crooked, and the ink often messes up the sketch.
What resolution do you use when scanning?

Actually all three of your questions are related! Getting the lines to look smooth is a combination of three different things.
First is just practice (you need to be sure of what you're drawing), which is why the sketching part is so important. If you're still experimenting at the inking stage then you didn't sketch enough!
Second is actually a bit counter-intuitive, but inking has to be done as FAST as possible. If you're a slow inker your hands are going to shake, its just the way it is! So you have to get practice at inking as fast as possible! (Which is I talk about accuracy in the tutorial). If you look in youtube, and see people that are amazing inkers doing work super fast, its not just that they're amazing, but in order for their work to look good, they HAVE to work fast.
This is one of those good habits you pick up from working traditionally.
The third trick that I use is the use of thick lines scanned at 400pdi (which is pretty big). I work on all my raw files in this format, and when they are reduced, a lot of the finer mistakes and details become too small to really be noticed, unless you're looking for them.
All of my pages have TONS of little mistakes, its just a matter of looking past a lot of the superfluous details and trying to get as much work out as possible. Practice makes perfect after all!

Ahh, speed is probably my main problem. My hands are naturally shaky, so I can see that going slow would wobble the lines quite a bit. Gotta practice with that!
Okay, so you work on your files while the image is large, then reduce the size after finishing? Sounds like a good idea. I usually scan at high resolution, then reduce the size before continuing digital work. I'll have to try to do that last.
Thanks for your input and taking the time to write such a big response!

I'm the same way, my hands are naturally shaky, it just takes practice!
Early reduction can delete a lot of your mistakes, but also your details, so always be wary of it
No worries, its good input, since I'm planning to make a series of these

It's a really good tutorial ~

Thanks, I figured the PC edits part would be the part people would probably benefit from the most, given that few people still draw traditionally.
Actually, there is nothing special about the way I make bubbles, I sketch them in during the sketching stage, and ink them during the inking stage. I do it manually, the trick it drawing them fast so that they look nice and fluid.
Thanks for your input! ^_^

I think this is helpful.
I'm not good at making comics at all and reading this tells me why. Though I do everything on the laptop than on paper.

CountDraggula In reply to kwhitepearl [2012-02-24 07:26:06 +0000 UTC]
I don't know why, but getting really messy on paper (as seen here) really helps me get into the creative process.
Making comics is a labor of love, you get from it what you put in. If you work hard, you're going to see your own work get better and better!

you don't need one, GIMP, which is free to download, has all the same tools that I use here. You'll just have to find where in the menus these are hidden [link] I hope this helps

I'm a dude. And yeah, don't be afraid of drawing just using paper and pencils, its how I do it. No tablet no nothing. Getting started is the hardest part, you just gotta go for it!

Ah, now that I know. Getting started on something is the hardest part, especially when you jump about every which way. XD I myself skip from end to middle to start because I'm like "Oh that's good" or "That needs to be changed"...
Ah but when it's done...then happiness ensues~ X3 For some reason, I feel super charged now. >w<;;;

you get out what you put into it! Still the whole process of making a comic takes about a month and a half? So its not too bad, just a little work every day ^__^
