Time for some Flexliner updates!Mads the DSB IC3 (MF 5003)
Mads was built in 1989, and was named as the first IC3 the same year.
His design is uniqe in multiple ways, as he's the last train designed by danish engineers. He's also the first of 8 designs of his later named "flexliner" family.
He (and his other siblings) were modified in 1998 to run with Eric and his siblings, and thos, are the only trains in the world to run DMUs and EMUs actively in one consist on a daily basis
Mads was repainted and refitted with new diesel engines in 2005. His services for DSB remained, until 2015 when he and Eric was bought by NWR to run express services there.
After a year on the island, he was repainted into InterCity Swallow livery, only to be repainted again in August 2017, back to his original livery.
In 2022, he was given a slight modification to his livery, where the IC3 logo was shrunken quite substantially and moved to be right next to the doors.
In 2023, Mads was retired from InterCity service, due to demand from the ORR. Mads has since moved to the Heritage fleet, where he happily lives a retired life as a heritage train, giving tours around Sodor, and telling about his 33 years of railway service.
Eric was built in 1993, and went in service in 1994.
He had problems with so called "noise currents", which made Earl and his siblings shut down and needing to have certain parts replaced.
Eric (and his siblings) were later modified in 1998 to run with Mads and his siblings.
He got repainted 2003, and continued his services for DSB until 2015, when he and Mads was sold to NWR to run the express services.
As a part of expanding their services, S.I.R. decided to have Eric's bogies modified, to have 3rd shoes on it, a custom modification, that can easily be taken off, as it can be mounted. This makes it possible for services further south than London. Even to an occasion, where he and Mads were sent to Southern, to help with semi-fast London - Brighton services. Proving to be popular amongst passengers.
Due to Demand from the ORR, Eric was retired from service in 2023, and lives a happy life as a retired EMU, running tours around Sodor, sometimes with Mads, telling about their lives and their designs.
