So this Vince guy was all excited to see Triz. “I didn’t think you were going to show up for this!” And he kind of just jabbers at her for a minute before he notices something and acts all shocked.

“You -! Beatriz, you’re not wearing it!”

Apparently he was horrified that Beatriz wasn’t wearing her Q-Bit since that was what the whole shebang was in honor of. “If Quinton sees that you’re not...! Do you want to borrow mine?”

“Nooo. I mean, thanks, but-“

I decided to jump in and shift focus. I pointed at the box of tasty looking treats he had in hand and asked if he had actually brought donuts to a catered beach barbecue. He explained that he had brought them specifically for Quinton. That’s when I recalled something else Triz had told me about Vince. He’s a real fan of his boss. Like full-on worships him.

“See, I know that Quinton has a real sweet-tooth for donuts,” Vince was saying. “And he’s also become a real snob for gourmet, imported caviar. Y’know, billionaire goals, I guess. So I got the idea to combine the two.”

Triz, Ree and I shared a queasy look.

“You mean-?”

“You know, like, take a jelly donut, but fill it with high-end caviar instead. I call ‘em ‘Roe-nuts’ - get it? They came out better than I expected. Might even market ‘em. Wanna try one?”

I usually try to be sensitive to people’s feelings, but I literally could not even. I jerked back in horror and Ree looked like she was set to hurl. Thankfully Vince clapped the box shut and turned our attentions to the sky above.

“Hey! Here he comes!”

Other heads lifted too and we saw Quinton Nash’s personal helicopter heading for the QuantUmYeah tower. Apropos of zip, I commented:

“Nice. A Sikorsky S-76C.”

Ree looked at me sideways and asked how I knew and why I cared what kind of helicopter it was ...and I had no answer for that.
