I reached a nearby island in no time and l laid Triz on the sand. She wasn’t breathing.

My memories prior to three years ago might be gone, but apparently I must’ve learned some CPR somewhere along the way because I immediately set about administering chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth. And praying.

After a minute or two, there was finally a convulsive heave and Triz coughed a geyser of sea water from her mouth. Her eyes fluttered open, confused and unfocused for a second and then they found mine. She brought her fingers to her salty lips, the same mouth I had just been breathing air into and had been kissing earlier that day, and she said in a soft croak -

“Deej...?”

I didn’t know what to say. I was both absolutely overjoyed she was alive and absolutely frozen that she had called me by my real, super secret identity name. So of course I panicked and flew away. ‘Cause that’s what heroes do, I guess...
