Cross Stitch Railroading TutorialI've written this tutorial as an aid to cross stitchers who want to know about the railroading technique: what it is and how it's done. This is the method I use when stitching; with practice, it becomes a very automatic motion. Railroading is a good habit to get into to keep your stitches looking their best.

This is a tutorial was originally written several years ago, and appears in the archives of the LiveJournal cross stitch community : [link] Though under a different user name and on a different site, both tutorials are my own work, written and photographed by me. I am not plagiarizing myself.
5/31/2008: Uploaded a new version, with many thanks to ~Zeffyface who caught my spelling errors. Aside from spelling, text remains unchanged.
6/11/2008: Uploaded yet another new version. Text is unchanged; I just fixed the formatting to make it look nicer.

Wow! I never, ever realized that you could possibly shade (like crosshatching!) with cross-stitch

Yup! You can also blend in a metallic for a little shine. I'll be posting a project soon in which I blended two blues to make the figure look like she's wearing blue jeans; it makes a great example.

I'd seen this technique around other places but the way you've explained it makes it easy to understand ... particularly helpful are the two examples you've used at the end ... re. This is a fasinating technique and admittedly I haven't of the technique. Mainly because my learning has been through a club at school and then I taught myself from there. Thank you for sharing this.

I was reading through this, because despite having never picked up a needle with the intention to sew (I do occasionally stab things with them) it's still really cool to know how these things are done.
I decided that stitching requires SO much forward planning that you must have brain cells ten times more powerful than mine just to hold all the information.
Also, you have a typo in the first paragraph with 'optinal' instead of 'optimal'. Don't kill me, please. I dun wanna die.

Been sewing for over 25 years, hun. It's ingrained. Don't forget, too, that the techniques I'm presenting in the tutorials I'm writing assume a familiarity with the hobby, not a "first time I picked up a needle" point of view.
