Description Gah, I think I'm actually done with the lineart now. (thank god) hilariously only about 20% of the original lineart is still there. lineart's done. period. text notes added because apparently people like that. completed the recoloring. and laid down a few layers of shades real quick. personally I'm so tired of this piece that I'm ready to just call it done.

a few quick notes: I didn't get nearly as involved with the shading as I originally had intended this was for the most part just really broad shades thrown down. I used a completely different method for shading the visor/eyes and while the method was notably easier and quicker, the results aren't nearly as good as my recent eyes. this is also the first case where I draw the actual sensors under the glass. similarly I'm still not sold on the color of the addon parts and I'm open to suggestions.

A quick explanation on the mecha itself:
as I've mentioned before this is a RX-10, a construction grade mecha, that has been heavily modified with additional armor and thrusters and given a gun to put it on the same performance level as grunt level military mecha.

The large boosters mounted on the shoulders are capable of rotating around and the entire assembly can move around a rail built into the shoulder armor. this allows the thrusters to point in pretty much any direction. compared to most mecha who use a standard set of small boosters mounted around the torso, the Militant can put much greater amounts of thrust into it's movements. like many mecha it also has a set of boosters mounted on the upper back along either side of the cockpit. While all of these boosters are cheap low end models (like everything in this upgrade package) having all four of them pointed backwards allows it to easily exceed the raw speed of all but a few mecha.
because of the energy requirements and heat issues that come about from those four boosters firing so often the mecha is equipped with a set of "shoulder spacers" and a pair of head mounted vents. the spacers include a set of sub-generators and auxiliary coolant systems. actually all these vents aren't literal vents they are heat radiators.
the Rx-10 is originally encased in a thin rather fragile platting that is more commonly used in civilian vehicles (like cars) instead of rearmoring the entire mecha the mecha is outfitted with extra armor plating around the torso arms and hips. The arm guards featured in this set includes a built in sheath for a standard metal knife (yes that drawing of the blade is to scale.)
The base RX-10's hand and feet are unchanged. the digits of both are capable of splitting open to reveal long manipulators for delicate work. The feet themselves are designed to allow them to grasp like hands complete with a opposeable thumb, which is located on the outside of the leg, not the inside like one might expect. because of the extreme similarities between the hands and feet it's not uncommon to see a cheaply repaired RX-10 utilizing a foot for a hand.
the gun being used here is the still unnamed TR Economy ASR I displayed earlier here: [link]

In case I haven't mentioned it this is my entry for 's "Spontaneous Art Contest" over on the Mecha Talk fourms.

How tall is it?

my last estimate on the size of the MFL mecha in general was 36ft tall.

Looks like the whole thing got tweaked up well. I like what you did to the head which makes it look more Feddie-ish. Nice work, hope you win the contest. ^^

Sad part is I really could care less if I win or not. It was just nice to have a deadline to meet.

You made it, right? Could've joined too but school's too crazy to let me do so.

yeah I made it by over a week before the deadline. if I hadn't gotten sidetracked in the middle of it I would have been done at least one week sooner. I've got to admit I was very happy to be done with this. I'm pretty sure I spent more time redrawing and photoshoping the lineart then I spent on the coloring. Truth be told I had meant to do a more elaborate shading job but by the time I got to it I was just so tired of the design I wanted to be done.

The shading here looks pretty simple but still decent in my opinion. Still it's the well drawn lines that make up for it.

yeah the shading is admittedly the weak point but as I stated before I was just so feed up with the piece by that point I just wanted to be done with it.

Bare flats or shaded, the RX-10 is still good with its lineart.

I'd hope the lineart ended up good, I spent too much frustrating time on it xD.hum. think I should put a bare lineart version up in case someone wants to color it themselves?

You did? Nice, now I should check that out. Sigh, the near thousand deviations demotivates me from checking my deviation inbox.

I know how that is I just recently cleared out my own. at least you can sort deviations into stacks now by artist.

Here's to hoping you win

CrashLegacy In reply to NoviceArtist487 [2010-03-20 23:49:02 +0000 UTC]

I hope I win to. this guy was too much a pain in my rear for me not to win.

Technically the contest is called the most unlikely grunt upgrade and this is actually and odd fit for it. the RX-10 wasn't starting out as a Grunt mecha, rather it's a civilian unit and if I wanted to make it's upgrade more unlikely I should have gone with a crazy melee focused design as the mecha is not very strong.

Well, good luck either way ^__^;

In the case that you don't win, at least you were able to create something kick-ass

Oh but on a serious note, I do like how you left the original lineart there. makes look a little dirty (Which is a good thing).

And I tried some more mechs using your style, and let me tell you. It is just absolute fun to draw like that.

What do you mean?

StrikeRougeMk2 In reply to CrashLegacy [2010-03-22 13:50:01 +0000 UTC]

I guess maybe how the line thickness actually varies and it looks like it is actually something animated and not just lined and MSpainted like mine. xD

CrashLegacy In reply to StrikeRougeMk2 [2010-03-22 17:10:45 +0000 UTC]

well for the most part that's just how I draw and the lead's edge wearing down as I go. most of the lines are composed of several free hand passes. some could be an effect caused by the fact that parts I redraw are usually done on separate sheets of paper and often time those other pages have a different texture to them. ..don't ask me why it's all printer stock xD. another observation is that I don't do any sort of lineart clean up before doing my lineart lifting and the results are usually light enough that I've got to duplicate the lineart once or twice to get it dark as it is.
