Tired of terrible dinobot alt modes (Masterpiece Grimlock, Fall of Cybertron), I decided to start putting my money where my mouth is. First up, Abyss. There's no reason a G1 dinobot can't be more anatomically correct than the rubbish we've been getting from people who know nothing of dinosaurs, and never bothered to even look one up.
She and Swift though are also getting some profile updates, as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Abyss
Faction: Autobot
Subgroup: Neo Dinobot
Alt. Mode: Plesiosaur
Function: Deep Sea Exploration/recon
Motto: "Uhmmm...what's a motto?"

Profile:
Abyss has never been accused of being the brightest diode on the circuit board, but she is one of the most loyal friends you could ever make.
Compassionate and caring to a fault, she has been known to capture military submarines, and escort them for great distances if she feels their presence threatens marine life.
Upon arrival of earth, she altered her form to that of a plesiosaur. She views her new role as being similar to the deep space missions she undertook during peacetime. This often has her separated from her team, or other autobots for weeks, if not months at a time. Even still, she's much happier in the oceans of earth, full and teaming with life, than in the desolate depths of space.
She's very caring and over protective of her brother, Swift.

Abilities:
Fuel efficient, Abyss uses less energy than most cybertronians of her size. The back of her beast mode is lined with absorbing materials capable of collecting the heat and light of the sun, and converting it into energy far more efficiently than solar cells. She has extremely dense armor, capable of allowing her to survive in all but Challenger's Deep. As a result, all but the most powerful of decepticon weaponry is but a minor annoyance to her. Sensors line her neck giving her consistant readings of any electrofields, sound waves, pressure and tempuratures around her. Mounted in the forehead of her beast mode is a powerful sonar array capable of giving her information from miles away.
In robot, Abyss is armed with an energy cutlass, and a standard issue sonic pulse rifle. Afterlosing it to a great white, she had her left arm replaced with a titanium harpoon accessible in both modes, capable of firing 1,000 feet.

Weaknesses:
Abyss get's lonely. Being away from anyone for the long stretches that her function requires, leaves her clingy when she returns to her team. She's also taken to talking to herself, just to hear the sound of someone's voice.
Her long recon missions often leaves her vulnerable, with help being unable to reach her, if she gets severely injured.

I have to say, she is one of the best OC Dinobots I have seen and I am not just saying that because I love aquatic alt-modes.

Neat gal and nice to find a fem twist on a dinobot, she seems like she'd be fun to work with. Though worth mentioning there was a plesiosaur dinobot in the comics named Paddles. He was kind of unlucky though.
For your girl though, I've got a question. If her armor's so strong, how'd a great white take off her arm?

Paddles isn't considered canon by any means. It never appeared in anything but a very short text story.
Also, it doesn't really bother me.

As for the hand, 'cause I needed a reason to justify why I took one away from her, lol.
It it matters, then she'd rather lose the hand than hurt the shark.

And thanks for the kind words!

Ahh, and Welcome. ^^ and for the bit it's worth, part of why I commented is because Plesiosaur's are a favorite of mine.

Yeah, Pleasiosaurs are extremely underrepresented in fiction.

For what it's worth, if I ever get off my butt and draw them, the other neo dinobots are an ankylosaur, parasaurolophus, and a flier if I can ever figure out something that won't be an exact duplicate of Swoop.

Nice. ^^ And Parasaurs are another I like. For your flier though, maybe an Archeopteryx? That'd be different enough. 'Cause most pterosaurs would look pretty similar...

Aye, I'd considered one of the bird raptors, like Sinornithosaur, or Microraptor. The trick with them I face is likewise, figuring out a transformatuion that's unique from Grimlock, or BW Dinobot.

For one's like that I'd offer up DinoZaurs. The transformations there are a bit different, but I'm not sure where you could find a good look at them now...

CrazyJetty In reply to NeonXenomorph [2013-10-10 01:08:24 +0000 UTC]

I have a few. But I'm more about trying to figure out something new and original. I designed Swift and Abyss in the ninties. These days I work really hard to make new transformation schemes that have at least a 90% sound engineering toy-wise.

*Nods* I know how that works. The only other suggestion I can make? Take dinosaur forms and kind of cut them apart to see what works, same as with vehicle alts. Fairly sure you've heard the suggestion before though.

Aye. I usually have an endgoal in mind, but i always design the alt mode first now and go from there.

Nice new character, I think it's surprising that, even when Beast Machines had its Dinobot subset, the only aquatic dinosaur we got was that one component of Magmatron.

CrazyJetty In reply to Picassamia [2012-09-22 01:04:34 +0000 UTC]

it would be nice to see more of them. but then, aquatic creatures are too under utilized period. so many seacreatures living and extinct would make awesome transformers.
and thanks for the fave, and kind words!

just what voices we'd like to see in future tf series.

I've been thinking that for a while as well, at least for the roles yet to be played by Nathan Fillion and James Remar in Transformers: Prime (which they were confirmed for). My money's on Remar voicing Ultra Magnus.

Not bad. The flesh tone is a bit strange, though.

its the same pink i've always used, and the same marker as from the previous abyss coloring.

i honestly dont see it myself. just looks like a flat, subdued pink, to me. PM-208: ballet pink is the exact designation. youre the second person to say it looks like flesh, so i dont really understand why this one does, but the same shade on the older version doesnt. out of curiosity, are you looking at it on a phone? my friend was, and i wrote it off as that, at the time.

Altitron In reply to CrazyJetty [2012-09-22 02:43:27 +0000 UTC]

No, I'm looking at it on the monitor that I use to color all of my own artwork with.

Seeing it on my mother's computer, it does look more peach than pink.
Wish I could get that effect when I intend it. I wonder if my scanner is starting to go out, it botched another color so something I scanned last night, that always went through just fine.

CrazyJetty In reply to Altitron [2012-09-22 04:00:15 +0000 UTC]

huh. dunno why it looks flesh, then. years ago, i chose pink to keep from an overload of grey.
i dunno. probably something with the scanner then. i have a gorgeous brown that scans green.

Somehow this one looks more humanoid but very as sharp and tricky as the Plesiosaur itself
