Description Super Heroines would be wise not sit next to grates, you never know what a super evil villain might do with that opportunity

Technical:

I had this idea the first time I saw the model This is my second attempt as the first attempt I didn't like how the hair turned out.

In this case I worked on some techniques using various tools with different levels of opacity. For example the hair was done with a saturation tool set to an opacity of 50%... darker areas I upped the opacity a bit more.

The eyes were a totally different way of doing a white washed effect for me, I utilized the heal tool and then a bit of playing with saturation again with a low opacity.

I found that this technique had the benefit of allowing to be build up the color slowly rather than all at once to get the effect I wanted... a different sort of "glow" than my last piece.

There are a few areas I may revisit in the future but in general I think it was a successful experiment

A special thanks to the stock providers:

Hehe love the title

Overall this is very good I do have a few suggestions though...

-First up a general suggestion for the background.. The background looks good and sort of suits the model+scene, but be careful when rotating layers to fix the blank spots arond the edges.

-Second, the hair. The hair looks very good. You've done an excellent job painting it. However, be careful when cropping hair to get as much of the former background out as possible - remnant of former backgrounds can ruin a scene very quickly. Because hair is so stringy and for the most part very non-linear, it makes cropping it out difficult. A quick and easy solution (that I find actually works quite well) is to use the Select-By-Color tool (might have a different name in PS but the effect is the same). Adjust the SbC-tool-settings to have a feathered/blurred/faded edge of 1-3px, depending on the image resolution. Then, select the empty pixels around the model and press Delete - if all went well, the edges of the model should be softer and slightly transparent (but only a bit - not enough to ruin the effect).

-Also for the hair... The shadows look fine, but be careful when using brightly-coloured hair to take the reflected-light into account. Light reflects off of everything it hits except black - the brighter the colour the more light is reflected. Brightly coloured hair is no exception. So, to make the hair look more natural (as natural as green can be ) try adding some faint green to the shadows and highlights on her face where the hair comes close and touches. Not much - but just enough that if you went looking for it you could see it. Remember: Most of the things that can ruin a manipulation and things that the eye does Not see, not what it sees.

-Next, the eyes. The eyes look very good, especially the darker one covered by hair - it looks amazing! See if you can add the outline of the pupil in the uncovered eye - the pupil is normally black and looks very unusual any other colour. However, if you can do a good enough job, it can look natural(ish). When you add the outline, try to make one side of the ring lighter/darker than the other so it doesn't look flat.

-Next up, the lips. Colour-wise the lips look fine - a little bright and with a very stark contrast to the rest of the image, but that's fine. My only suggestion is to fade the edges of the red so it isn't as sharp around the edges of the lips. Also try adding some very faint red highlights on her cheeks to show the light reflecting off her lips.

-Finally, the overall colour. Personally I have no problem with black and white images, even when they have some colours added for emphasis, but be careful in situations like these. Because everything else in the image is coloured, the woman would look better if she had the slightest colour in her skin. Not much, say only 1 or 2% colour, but enough that it isn't straight b&w.

hehe...sorry of the word-wall Hope you find some of it helpful

Dan

Hey thanks, much appreciated with the suggestions and thoughts. You've given me a few ideas on how to handle hair in particular that I hadn't thought about ... Thanks for the critique I always find them helpful!

Not a problem. Actually not many people have heard about that - feathering the selection - I use it all the time to clean up images that would be a pain to cleanup otherwise.

Well I use GIMPS feathery brushes ... but feathering to selection might actually work better in these regards.

Well I wasn't going for the death effect on this one but yeah it did come to mind as well The model has very nice smile but the angle and the effect on this stock image, just reminded me of a "Joker" look
