Description
Rough Diamond is an expert jewel thief and a master of disguise, as well as the main antagonist of “Manehattan Mysteries”. In this picture, she is disguised as a police officer and is under the guise of “Officer Fluffles”. In addition to being a jewel thief, Rough Diamond is also known as the “Second-Story Prancer”, and one of the biggest crimes she made was rob the First National Bank of Equestria while disguised as Princess Luna!

Whether this would come as a shock to anyone is something I don’t know, but…”Manehattan Mysteries” is actually one of the very few MLP comics by IDW that I actually enjoyed. Everything about it was splendid! The writing by Ted Anderson was cleverly well-done, the art by Agnes Garbowska’s was smooth-flowing and beautiful, and the story’s moral was deeply meaningful and welcoming. The overall focus and portrayals of Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, Trixie, Apple Bloom, and Babs Seed were enjoyable as well; it was especially nice to see Babs and Trixie be given more depth as characters, and their growing friendship throughout the story was an incredibly nice touch.

Unlike most of MLP comics, “Manehattan Mysteries” is also one of the very few that I believe coexists perfectly with the overall canon of the show. I can’t recall any episode retconning it, nor do I remember the comic containing any aspects that’d be contradictory to the show. Considering the fact that the 6th issue of “Friends Forever” focusing on Rainbow Dash and Trixie was mentioned in the story, I think that comic also coexists nicely with the show canon.

On the subject of Rough Diamond…I will admit that she never particularly stood out to me. Then again, I’m not even sure if that was the intention. “Manehattan Mysteries” was obviously intended to be a mystery story, and Rough Diamond was a character whose actual identity had to be kept a secret until the end. It wouldn’t have been the right time to explore her background, and her overall role probably would’ve made giving her more depth difficult beyond others. Still, Rough Diamond definitely had potential. It would’ve been nice to see her appear more, that’s for sure.

In regards to the picture…this one was another one of the most difficult MLP gameloft pictures I’ve ever worked with. In its original state, there were small stars all over the place. So, I used the adjust feature on my Photos app in order to erase the stars on both the character and parts of the town surrounding her. It turned out to not be as simple, though, because either white from the erased stars would still be appearing or parts that I didn’t intend on erasing would get smeared. However many times I frequently worked on the picture is something I don’t know, but recently, I decided that the best way to fix the spots was to simply color them in. I colored in the white smeared spots, and fixed the faded lines by simply coloring over them by making new lines. Afterwards, I used the adjust feature to remove any signs of things getting colored.

All in all, this was a challenging picture to work with, but I think everything turned out pretty well.
