Aaaaaaaand, we're back! I know, I'm just as surprised as you are. Normally some four whole months go by before I find the time and energy to post things again. It seems, for once, I got some decent classes this semester that don't turn me into a complete zombie. We'll see how long that lasts in the next month for so.

Anyways, this one's been a longtime coming - a commission by the always awesome , who requested an ant-like alien for the ever-growing Omnitrix roster! So without further delay, let's get rolling.

Onto the facts!

Name: VolcAntic

Species: Asthenopterran

Home World: Ignis

Powers/Abilities: As his namesake implies, VolcAntic is able to produce a powerful, electromagnetic current that allows him to manipulate existing sources of liquid rock, such as surface pools of lava. At full strength this extends to magma located just beneath the Earth's crust, allowing him to effectively create or force volcanoes to erupt.

Furthermore, Asthenopterrans are capable of producing a sort of synthetic lava from five, specialized secretion glands in their abdomen. This 'Synthlava', as Ben calls it, is virtually indistinguishable from melted lava produced by a planet's internal pressure and heat, but notably cools much faster due to its significantly lower temperature. Asthenopterrans can fire this Synthlava as a continuous jet, stagger the stream to produce pulse shots, and as easily manipulate it as all natural lava.

VolcAntic has enhanced strength, being capable of lifting a truck over his head and throwing it the length of a city block.

Being a eusocial species, Asthenopterrans have the previously undiscovered ability to command certain species of Earth insects. This is due to the pheromones they primarily use to communicate with one another in place of a verbal language being convergent with those produced by ants, wasps, bees, and sawflies. This ability was previously unknown in Asthenopterrans due to no member of their species ever visiting Earth until Ben unlocked VolcAntic.

VolcAntic can climb vertical surfaces using his claws.

Despite their size, male Asthenopterrans can fly using the pair of wings on their back.

VolcAntic's mandibles are strong and sharp enough to cut through electrical wiring in one bite and chew through Arachnichimp silk in several minutes.

An Asthenopterran's abdomen can be used in a manner similar to a club, not unlike that of Earth ankylosaurs. On average, they are heavy and powerful enough to smash in the roof of a car with one swing.

Weaknesses: VolcAntic's main weakness is the sheer collateral damage that he can cause when using his abilities, such as melting a row of parked cars after getting punched by Yetta while firing his Sythnlava at her. Even to his allies, he presents a near-constant level of danger to those around him.

For all their strength, Asthenopterrans are simply too heavy for most materials or structures to hold their weight. This means that they can only scale so far up vertical surfaces, about 10 ft, before they fall.

While VolcAntic can command certain species of insect to do his bidding, the pheromones are incompatible with most other insects, such as beetles, mantises, flies, or cockroaches. This same level of control also does not extend to other members of the animal kingdom, even those that are arthropods, such as spiders, crustaceans, or centipedes.

Large amounts of water can solidify an Asthenopterran's lava before they have a chance to properly use it, such as that produced by an Orishan.

Due to simply lacking the full motion of his arms, VolcAntic is not as strong as Humungousaur.

Though capable of flight, male Asthenopterran's are admittedly clumsy fliers at best due to the bulk of their abdomen making them rather unwieldy.

Etymology: VolcAntic's name is a portmanteau of "volcanic", referring to this lava-manipulating abilities, and "ant", referencing his insect appearance.

Trivia: The species name is taken from "asthenosphere", the layer of earth that lies above the molten mantle of a planet. It is mechanically weak due to being so close to the planet's core, therefore being somewhat partially melted.

The species' home world is taken from the Latin word "ignis", which simply means "fire".

Interestingly, Ignis is a level featured in the web and mobile game Wrath of Psychobos, and features a species of extraterrestrial arthropod as enemies. These are, in fact, a version of the Asthenopterrans that were previously non-sapient before an alteration to the timeline resulted in a butterfly effect that elevated them to complete sapience.

VolcAntic's appearance is primarily inspired by the Danian Tribe from the Chaotic franchise.

Ben initially unlocked VolcAntic while exploring a lost temple located beneath Mt. Vesuvius with Kai. Not wanting to admit to her that he was going to name the transformation something as 'easy' as "Fire Ant", he came up with "VolcAntic" on the spot and doubled down when she continued to tease him about it.

Asthenopterrans, as a species, are generally petulant and closed off by nature, owing to their natural history. They are typically distrustful towards the few other species they have encountered and prefer to be left to their own devices. They are not inherently aggressive or specifically see violence as the only answer, but have little experience in more peaceful methods.

Despite their eusocial behavior, the Asthenopterans neither have queens nor a hive-mind. While females are sexually dimorphic, they hold no disproportionate amount of power than other members of their species. As a leadership, the entire, mature population of their species decides on matters as a collective and spends lengthy amounts of time debating until a conclusion has been reached.

As the second planet in its system, Ignis orbits an A-type star and has a large asteroid in its own orbit that functions similarly to a moon. It once had a cool, coastal climate with a global ocean spanning two supercontinents dominated by a sapient, megafaunal species known as the Brobdingnagians. Arrogant of their titanic size of 67 ft, they devastated and destroyed their environment with little heed of the species they shared their planet with - including the Asthenopterrans. Regardless as little more than pests to obliviously crush underfoot, the two species inevitably went to war as the latter sought retribution for the former’s transgressions and pretentiousness. This would ultimately result in the Asthenopterrans triggering a mass extinction event by agitating a super volcano. When the ash and dust settled, only the Asthenopterrans and a few generalist and extremophile species were left to inherit the self-imposed wasteland.

With the extinction of the Brobdingnagians and 98% of its native biosphere, the Plumbers have quarantined their home system until the ecological and societal turnover has settled. The hope is that the Asthenopterrans will use this period of exile to stabilize and prepare themselves for interacting with the rest of the galaxy - for both their own and everyone else’s sake.
