yes...however since there are only two unicorn/pegasus poines (hence, Luna and Celista) in the whole series, there shouldn't be another one. My friend Lai tried to understand it herself and it didn't make sense to her. Same goes for me.

I have a simpler idea for how it could work - if a unicorn and a pegasus had kids, there's, like... some percentage of them having a alicorn kid. Probably a third or less chance.

I really like this theory and it makes me more confident in making (resurrecting from when I was 5) my own alicorn fan character. I know it will make a lot of people shout "SUE" but alicorns are just so pretty.
I also had a sort of idea that maybe there is a much more complicated process to this involving many more traits. (I know this was simplified for your explanation but I want to just share my opinion here.)
Mainly because I always thought that a unicorn's horn only amplified a pony's magical ability as well as likely stabilizing it. I never thought that the horn contained all of a pony's magic. (It is probably the heart that contains magic because "Friendship is Magic" and all that jazz.) And that a pegasus (Celestia forbid) could be born without the ability to walk on clouds or that an earth pony could do the same. (Cheerilee in Cutiemark Chronicles animation mistake.) As I've seen you say in the comments, an animation mistake could easily become canon like Derpy/Ditzy Doo.
How I see it, there are the classes of "earth pony" "unicorn" and "pegasus" each with a set of expected abilities and qualities. But a pony with two hybrid parents that both have unicorn horns could be born with no horn. Or that, like your example, Dinky could easily be the offspring of Derpy and Whooves. Just because one pony does not have a unicorn horn does not mean she cannot perform magic, nor does it mean that one who has a horn possesses magic.
On another train of thought: Unicorn, Pegasus, and Earth Pony are called on physical appearance and just have other traits pinned to them when that isn't the case. We have ponies as different as Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash that are both in the Pegasus group after all. I agree wholeheartedly that genes affect our behavior, but putting them in a group as being associated with a physical feature doesn't make much sense to me, but if all of these traits are shown by a purebred pony my above theory would work out.
I don't actually know much about what I'm talking about and have no formal training in genetics so if you find major flaws in my reasoning, that is okay. Feel free to correct me. I would love to hear a response!

To start off, I am going to tell you that I have only seen two episodes of this show. No more.
Now, I am going to tell you that even though I've only seen two episodes, I don't believe your reasoning here is quite right. I understand that you are trying to defend the existance of alicorn OCs, and that's fine. Some of it is actually a bit understandable. However, some things here don't fit.
For example, no one, be it human or pony, acts a certain way because of their genes. Just because Pinkie may act like a unicorn does not mean she has unicorn DNA. Same with Fluttershy.
The basic point I want to get across is that I don't think DNA even matters in this show. They're a ground pony, a unicorn, or a pegasus. That's it. I'm sure that you could have a male pegasus and a female ground pony mate, and you could still end up with a unicorn. In fact, I heard that Lauren Faust has even said so herself. Some things are just not meant to be logical.

I'd suggest you go read the study of the domestication of foxes published by National Geographic if you truly believe that not a single gene can influence behavior.

I read that and another article from Time. Some genes can influence behavior. However, this doesn't stand true for racial (or whatever they are in the MLP world) genes. Just because you are French does not mean you like to flirt with people at any moment. Likewise with MLP. Just because you are a pegasus does not mean you have to act like a pegasus.

I was simply using a stereotype as an example. You did the same, saying that Pinkie acts like a unicorn. You used unicorn as a stereotype just as I used pegasus. I did not mean for "acting like a pegasus" to come out as me attacking the stereotype.

Then do you want to explain how Pinkie can teleport and bring things into existence from out of nowhere without attributing those abilities to unicorns?
Because I though that kind of magic was a unicorn thing, teleporting and matter materialization.
Not every unicorn can do it obviously, but it is something that unicorns are supposed to be able to do.
