I drew Izrekiel again! Whoooohooo! Lol.Long story short, I was researching Chinese blades to decide what type of sword Izrekiel would have, and I decided on a jian blade, about 90 cm in length.
Colored with Copic Ciao markers, and a few Spectrum Noir markers.

Hmmm... I suppose Chinese. The way I think of it, culturally, he is more Ancient Chinese. In Japan, they adapted a lot of their culture and technology from their Chinese neighbors. Chopsticks, for example, and traditional ink wash paintings.
So far as timeline stuff goes, in Akata, I would equate the time period to about... the late Tang Dynasty (c. 618 - 907 AD). Okay, so maybe not ancient, but the Chinese equivalent to Europe's Medieval Period (except... not a dark age). They had a centralized government, and an exploration into art, poetry, and philosophy. However, I find it important to note that Akata is closer in size to Japan than China. It is a peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides (not exactly an island, but close). They, like Japan, were isolationists.
Ethnically, yes, definitely Chinese. Especially, the royal family. Izrekiel, Ryukou, and their parents are close to "pure-blooded," and because of intermarriage with close families, they also exhibit a lot of the same traits (some of them genetic mutations), such as blue eyes, really pale skin, and being generally taller. Ia Kitsura (Izrekiel and Ryukou's mother) is not pure-blooded royalty, which is why her eyes are brown, but her family comes from the same region.
Anyway, it's all confusing...
In Callous, when Izrekiel wakes up from his millennium-long slumber, he basically wakes up in a different country, although in the same area. What was once Akata has been replaced by the feudalistic country of Houira. The Houirans are mixed ethnicity, with Aka and Demali ancestry (the old countries from Izrekiel's time.) Consider Houira of CallousΒ to be similar to the end of the Edo Period in Japan, bordering the Meiji Period. They are being introduced to foreign technology which is changing their country drastically.
Wow... All that to say that Izrekiel is Aka (similar to Chinese), and when he wakes up, all the people around him are Houiran (mixed and similar to Japanese).Β Β
