Description
The creature's body crumbled and fell away in dusty remnants, and Saya's eyes turned back to normal, from the glowing red to warm brown. Suddenly, she felt very weak.

As she collapsed, dropping her blade to the ground, Haji caught her.

"Saya!" He held her in his arms, kneeling in the frozen snow.

"I'm sleepy . . . so sleepy." She just barely whispered it, so that he had to strain his ears to listen. He zipped up the front of her coat. "You've got such a deep wound," she said, noticing the red that dripped down his once-white shirt.

"My wound will close up soon," he said, trying his best to smile reassuringly at her.

"Perhaps it will . . ." A single snowflake drifted down and landed lightly on her cheekbone, just below her eyelashes. "Please forgive me," she said suddenly, her voice faint. Clouds of visible breath rose from her lips as she spoke.

Haji's eyes widened, his eyebrows going up in worry. "Saya." He tightened his mouth to stop himself from saying any more. What was there to say?

"I can't . . . keep my eyes open any longer." She paused, then raised her head as much as her strength would allow, to look up at his face, into his greyish-blue eyes. "I'm starting to feel as if . . . another long sleep is about to come over me like before."

This time he did smile, for her sake, his faint smile, the one that she had grown so used to, that didn't quite reach his eyes. "I'll be waiting for you."

Saya reached up and touched his cheek, and his hand rose to meet it in response, holding the fingers gently in his own.

"Do you remember . . . the promise?" she asked, her eyes growing heavier. Her hand fell.

"I do."

"When I'm done . . . when I'm done hunting Diva . . ." The rest came out in a barely discernable whisper as her eyes closed.

Haji watched her, snow falling down between them. His face lost its emotion. "I will watch over you forever, Saya. . . even if you turn into something else, even if somehow we're separated from each other. I will find you and protect you, no matter what it takes." His voice grew stronger as he said this.

"I will always be with you," he pledged. "Saya . . . So . . ." He pressed his forehead against hers. "For now, have a good sleep." He repeats her name. "Saya . . ."

The lone snowflake melted to water on her cheek, Haji holding onto her, the coldness of the rest of the area not touching them, for they would always be together. Snow continued to fall . . .

I just had to type out this scene.
