Eep.This was a shading experiment, attempting to create a creepy effect to enhance the crazy expressions. I probably overdid it a little, though. And here is an alternate version without all the shading.
It took me a while to decide what to do with Rainbow Dash for this picture. The other five were all pretty obvious, even if I exaggerated one or two of them a bit. But Dash... well, making her cower in doubt just didn't fit the theme of the picture, even if that was her equivalent breakdown, so I decided to make something up instead.
I think Rarity turned out the best here, probably due to black on white color contrast.
This is one of my entries for the December Draw-Off competition hosted by Calpain through Equestria Daily. For some reason, I didn't want to upload this here until after the final compilation post went up. And now it has, so here this is. I wish I'd been able to come up with a good background for this, but I had no idea what would look any good.

Hm, I personally don't like the blur effect. It causes them to look more distorted than.. Crazed. It greatly distracts me from the real purpose of the picture, which is depicting the ponies. All I can think about is how blurry Fluttershy looks and how they appear like they're going to blow up.

me too, like, it's just not this one, it's a lot of drawings that shouldn't have been there.. even more disturbing is that there is drawings with a higher number of views, favs and downloads that is further back than some drawings that don't have that much.. what's the point of a frontpage if it's not showing the most viewed art ?

Well, basically all I did was make some show-accurate pictures, then blurred the outlines as an experiment. The show itself uses no real shading at all, most of the time, just flat colors, so I wasn't trying to give this realistic lighting or anything, but was just playing around with vector filters.
Anyway, "pillow-shading" is not a term I had ever heard before, and I freely admit I have nothing in the way of art training. This was pretty much the 2nd time I've ever shaded anything, and I'm pretty surprised myself that it ended up on the front page. So yes, this isn't exactly realistic, but wasn't really meant to be.

Normally I would too, but decided this was a good opportunity to experiment a little, to try to make it stand out a bit more in the competition. The unshaded version just seemed forgettably straightforward to me.
