I think mint will be the next ubuntu in popularity. Mu ubuntu eventually dies by simply doing updates. some kind of update fails to install correctly and the system either looses functionality or some other problem happens. mint has been running ok so far.

you're probably right. Maybe once your system is running flawlessly, don't update it anymore. I've learned that about windows updates, so I'd think the same principals apply.

Well I've been running Ubuntu on one of my servers for years. I think it's finally time to drop it though, at the time Ubuntu was one of the best around. But now i have been looking at Debian, and I have seen mint before, I did like it.

Very nice.

Yep, I'm actually Beginning to get around to transition to linux lol. Because Microsoft is copying apple more than ever now, Nothing I want, Linux is free at least lol.

Though for my desktop, I'd probably throw Kubuntu 12.10 in it, maybe fedora kde, but we'll see. lol

and my laptop doesn't really run well with windows vista anymore... so... it makes sense to run linux on it. lol

*off topic* I've had a brief experience with Red Hat. I did not like it at all.

I've been Using Windows 8 Enterprise on quite a few of my computers, though it is a new idea from Microsoft, I agree it does have a bit of an apple influence... In my opinion, Apple is going to start losing sales in the next few years for soon there fans will figure out that they have been virtually buying the same damn gadget every year. The way I see it, the big two (Apple and Microsoft) are kind of at a cross roads right now. Apple for one because they keep coming out with the same computer, just with faster hardware or s a better style. And for Microsoft, Windows 8 Marks NT 4.0, which is version four of the same basic thing but with MAJOR visual changes (apple lacks that). So really I think Microsoft should drop it's Terrible NTFS File system and move to the ext4 system. AND both companies should try something new!

Linux to me has always seemed inevitability simple and fast, and it runs on Terrible hardware! Which is an upside seeing as Windows has a thing for Graphic intense GUI's, Though I will admit that Ubuntu has gotten to be like that too...

A lot of what I see today is that Java applications are becoming more popular, and the school that I work at, they are a mess to run on windows because of the ever so seeming CONSTANT updates that they have (mostly .jar files). Linux has always been a more Java Friendly OS(s), which for me is admirable. I don't see why computer companies don;t start making more Unix based PC's so the consumer (or the user) can load any operating system they want, whether it be Macintosh, Windows, or Linux.

you know Dell released their developer's edition Dell XPS ultrabook with ubuntu in it. but for $1500, No way Jose!

though I'll need to figure out what to do with my server though, since windows + Linux doesn't really mix the best. lol

And speaking of servers... I'm thinking about throwing my server into a real server case, though the [link] is the only one that meets my criteria. lol

Now You're speaking my language!!! I have taken an absolute love to rack mount anythings! I had an old 38 Sun Rack in my house for a while, >_> Got rid of it though (I really hated it, and as bonus, it was made for Telecom equipment or Sun Servers only. So needless to say my smaller dells would fit at all.) Annny way. That case looks very solid, although, the only thing I think it lacks is hot swap drives. That has really become a preference of mine when looking for servers these days, although All of my personal servers are Dell's PowerEdge series, which most of them come standard with hot swap drives. Though most industrial Rack servers have hot swap capability coming as a standard. Although, if you aren't really thinking you'll have to replace your drives on the fly... (I now have a dedicated bit torrent server That can't afford downtime) This case is rather ideal!!!

It looks as though it has the mounting holes from everything from Mini-ITX to E-ATX Boards. When I was building my Minecraft Server I made the mistake of getting an Intel board that needed Mounting holes in the chassis. No matter the board was and E-ATX (12x13 inches) and a dual processor board.

I have started using Linux Mint. (I know, Yay right!) On My Dell XPS 710 SE it runs rather fantastic. I just installed it on one of my D630's and I am further loving it for the lack of drivers I had to install, Which was none to my surprise!! I think you should flat-out avoid Ubuntu, it GUI has just gotten so bloated, and quite a bit of "untrusted packages" have made their way onto the software center.

For a server, I would HIGHLY Recommend Debian! Not for the Linux aspect, but because it is so light weight, and from what I have seen with Linux permissions, It runs pretty well with the standard Samba protocol that Windows uses. and it supports MySQL! Which was a big check in my book. Although I think most Linux Flavors do anyway.

" but for $1500, No way Jose!" I should just say right now, My Mobile Workstation cost 2,400 Bucks

Yep, Though they're pretty darn expensive those cases lol. but if not a rack case, Something slim enough to be thrown under the bed. lol

and if you seen my server (which you probably have lol) that is one heck of a small micro-atx board, but yeah, I'm sure most cases can support that lol.

Yay Linux Mint! and Ubuntu isn't the worst, but ya... I'd probably use fedora first lol. Speaking of Fedora, I'm thinking about throwing either Kubuntu or Fedora KDE on my desktop, I'm not sure which, but I'll figure it out soon enough lol.

That's the thing. I still have my WHS 2011 copy, I don't know if I should throw it into my server, or make an AMD e350 system and throw it in there, and install linux on my current server, I'm just not too sure atm. lol

And $1500 for an ultrabook, what you have is a workstation mobile, so that price is fine lol. I've learned that a $400 laptop meets my criteria pretty well, though I am totally willing to spend a lot of money towards a desktop. lol

Well, I do have an ultra-book don't get me wrong, I just (shockingly) don't have a Dell Ultra-Book. I have an HP Folio 13, Which is okay, it was one of the first to appear on the market.

I should say that cost me about 1,200 bucks. Meh. Well, if you are thinking that you have enough experience with Linux to do all that you want I'd say go for it!

But, from what I remember, WHS 2011 Was more of a *cough* Backup Solution for all of your computers than an actual Server system. I don't think that you will need To be running anything like Active Directory Domain Services anytime soon, So perhaps you just put your WHS Package on the shelf for a while?

A Server Under your bed?!!?! That's a new one. If you consider that most servers are left on all the time (that isn't to say that you will have yours on all the time though) the dust under a bed is going to be a HUGE issue, my servers sit on a box (one on top of the other) And they collect massive amounts of dust. I mean it's crazy, I have to use a Datavac to get most of it out. lol. that is the fun part though.

Well, I have been Running Mint on one of my Workstations (the one I am typing this on actually), and I must say that I love it, I haven't had a chance to Work With Fedora Surprisingly. Guess That's the one I will try next then.

I have no ultrabook, so... lol

WHS 2011 ay, I've learned it's essentially a stripped down version of windows 7, so I could do some serving functions with it.

and I know, if do end up doing that, I'll need a lot of dust filters huh? lol

Turns out Only Distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint (both are ubuntu technically lol) can install on my laptop. Fedora for some reason doesn't like my laptop. We'll need to wait and see how it would do on my desktop. lol

Well, one of the main Issues I had with ubuntu is it never seems to quite like the RAID controllers on my machines, I got lucky With My Dell PowerEdge 2970 Because It has a PERC 6 (PowerEdge RAID controller Generation 6)

And I'd say you will!!

yep, though there are many different UI's (user interfaces), like in a nutshell, there is Gnome, KDE, XFce, and Ubuntu's own Unity.
So many different styles, but all nonetheless cool. lol
