Perhaps a cool but unthought-of storyline to involve the late Captain. The Dire Wraiths try to escape limbo and start breaking thru the dimensional barrier where Captain Marvel rests.

I think my girlfriend's dog could do a better job of writing anything Rom related then marvel these days. a couple of renegade spaceknights just appeared in Nova 15 that were basically a couple of thugs for hire. as for Captain Marvel I'm so out of the loop these days. one minute CM is a woman and the next a man again. just today I grabbed some random back issues from a deep discount box including an Avengers Vs X-Men: Secret Avengers (2012) issue where CM is back in his own body but as a bad guy some how.

Marvel, like DC, definitely has lots of ideas on how to self-destruct its own Co. They brought back classic 70's Captain Marvel thru a Time Travel story. I guess it's their inroad to undoing the Starlin story,The Death of... I saw Jim Shooter at a con some years back and he said when he was Editor In Chief he didn't go for lame story-lines and also under his tenure "Death was dependable'" lol.

Makes for a hellava team up  and Ol' SuperSkrully is one of Marvels best villians!  Loved his scrape with Spidey and Ms. Marvel back in the late 70's ,  drawn by good ol' John Byrne!

funny you should mention that only a couple of moths ago i checked out from my local library this hardbound book special of many of the collected Fantastic Four works by Byrne that included that very same action packed Team Up issue you just mentioned.

I love Byrne's artwork,  it allways reminded me of some pre-anime style,  Though he tickled me with his penchant for leaving out the eyes(something Ron Liefeld could care less about! Ha!)during his X-men years,  and he FINALLY got a chance to exercise his Breast fetish by drawing She-Hulk baring her breast during a (failed, but WE didn't mind! Arf! )stand-up routine!

well i'm something of a boob man myself so i certainly understand the breast fetish phenomena. just a couple weeks ago i was caught up in a debate about steve ditko's artwork in the 80s and 90s. he worked on Rom for the last 16 issues of the series and i absolutely HATED his pencils which looked exactly the same from his work in the 60s which gave the art work in Rom a very out dated and all around goofy look. it was vastly inferior art when compared to 80s greats like Byrne, Sal Buscema, Michael Golden and Allan Davis just to name a few.

I'm a Leg and Ass man and proud of it!  All you have to do is look at my drawings of famous classic porn stars as well as Vid-Game girls!  I like Ditkos work on classics like the Creeper and of course no one can match him for the complete weirdness of Dr. Strange (Their workin' on a script for Doc right now!)but Steve drew an Avengers Annual with John Byrne doing the inks,  it took place in the mid-80's  after Bruce Banner lost control over the Hulk and Doc Strange sent him into another dimension,  It wasn't spectacular,  like Kirby he can't draw like he did in his younger days but it was nice to see an old master at work,  and villians don't come weirder than Arnim Zola!  He was right at home!  I never saw the last issues of Rom,  but from what you say i guess its best to skip' em.

Thanks for that shot of Sal,  Another great artist whos face i've never seen!  He was one of my inspirations,  wish he hadn't left the New Mutants as his style fit their look perfectly,  About Ditko,  His style DOESN'T fit Rom but he gave it a go(you know Sals contract might have been up!  Could be why he left but i don't know the details)Anyway comparing Ditkos work then as to his classic stuff back in the day is ludicrous,  Like comparing Kirbys earlier works from the mid-70s on back,  Totally superior(even Stan Lee said so) Ditkos Rom work is like comparing a younger more energetic artist to one whos been in the biz for years and can't draw with the same speed and detail,  George Perez is a good example,  the man can still draw up a storm but you look at his stuff from the 70's and 80's and you wonder if the man was human,  the amount of detail STILL blows my mind!

Sal left the Rom series over creative differences with Bill Mantlo. it's really unfortunate because the book suffered severely after that from a visual stand point. i'm pretty much at a point now where when ever i see ditko's art anywhere it practically invokes my gag response much like someone who purges by sticking their fingers down their throat.

Now, Now, Ditkos place in comic history is WELL earned!  He may not be Rom material but stuff like The Creeper, His work on those classic Horror comics back in the day(some of the best EVER made!)and of course Dr. Strange and the early Spiderman issues,  Some of the finest works of the age!  Its too bad we don't have those old horror mags that DC, Marvel. Charlton etc.  used to put out,  I loved those books!  And guys like Ditko(who had a rep for being somewhat "out there")  ruled supreme!

yeah well by the time the late 70s and 80s came around we were getting some really detailed and dynamic kick ass art by the likes of Michael Golden. John Bryne, Sal Buscema, Alan Davis, Mike Zeck and the before mentioned George Perez. unfortunately, ditko's work at that same time (as seen in the final issues of Rom for example) was exactly the same as it was in the 50s and 60s which gave his work a very dated look in comparison and made it come off as down right goofy looking. i'm afraid ditko's work during that time just left me with such a sour taste that i don't care to see his stuff at all.

We came up at a time when a new revolution in artwork had begun,  spearheaded by the likes of Neal Adams, Joe Kubert(his son Adam did damn good work on the X-men!)John and Sal Buscema, George Perez,  John Byrne et.all....
brought a vigur of extreme detail and realism not found since the old EC comics of the 50's,  The writing also changed,  more direct, more mature and reflected the times that i grew up in(70's and 80's)We were spoiled by such works we took such high detail for granted,  but i was facinated by what came BEFORE me,  the old works by Ditko, Kirby(his best stuff was in the 60's and early 70's)Kirby's work on the 200l: A Space Odyssey is simply AWESOME but Sci-Fi allways brought the best out of him,  he was a feverent believer in "whats out there".  Think this:  After what you just told me Ditko probably got corraled into doing Rom cause they had no one availible to do the work on time, hes not the first,  Marvel pissed me off royally during the late 70's and early 80's cause their policies drove some of their top talent to DC(like Marv Wolfman and George Perez)the same shit that caused Todd MacFarlane to give Marvel the heave-ho, ergo;  Rights of ownership to characters YOU created! They had guys like Alan Kupperburg and Gene Colon drawing the Avengers(*shudder* Gene was great with mystery type stories  like Dracula and Night Force but drawing slam-bang combat?  No.)THIS is why John Byrne got handed Fantastic Four on a silver platter after he and Chris Claremont got into it over the X-men!  (A good thing too,  some of his best works were on that title!)Theres alot of fucked up politics behind the scenes in the comics biz we aren't privy to or just now are finding out, but i was allready noseing around the biz and i didn't like what i heard!  Trying to pump out artwork on time is stressfull enough without being pulled into such nonsense! If i could draw comics i do it for the kids, THE FANS!!  Corporate Bullshit only raises my bloodpressure!

Gene Colan and Berni Wrightson (Swamp Thing) both have styles that lend themselves really well to mystery/horror type stories. as far as all the behind the scenes stuff goes yeah i've learn quite a lot as well over the course of running my blog. the shit between Jim Shooter and Bill Mantlo was the stuff of day time soaps. on an interesting side note did you know that the Torpedo character who was basically Rom's side kick was created by Marv Wolfman?

Narked In reply to csuhsux [2014-04-02 19:47:03 +0000 UTC]

No i didn't, but anything Marv writes is golden in my book!  I'm the proud possesor of The original Torpedo's first mini-series way back in the mid-70's,  I saw some young Japanese girl has the Torpedo suit now and she runs with the New Warriors,  thats a wayyss back now though,  And don't get ME started on "The Stilt-Legger!" named Jim Shooter!  He did Marvel a lot of good,  But he also did a lot of total BULLSHIT!!  Thats what happens when your ego is as big as your body!

thanks, a lot of my Rom related fan art in the last year has focused on featuring Rom with other Marvel characters in situations that never took place but should have back in the day. it was just a matter of time before i could get something done with CM being the iconic cosmic Marvel character that he is. a while back i did do something with those two but it was just digital art i dunno if i ever shared it with you before or not romspaceknightart.blogspot.com…
