Not too long ago,I related an abbreviated history of the drive-in movie theater in a journal entry.I was inspired into turning it into this.I did it black-and-white because I loved the Big Book series that was published by DC in the 90's,under the name Paradox Press...what a shame they ended it before publishing The Big Book Of Big Bad Women...I was really looking forward to that one.
Oh,almost forgot...my main source for this was the 1997 book,The American Drive-In Movie Theater by Don and Susan Sanders...fascinating reading.

In my local town, we still have a drive-in. And I love it! In the age of cell phones, I don't see why they're not coming back. At a drive in, you don't have to worry about other people talking or otherwise being disruptive. Our local one is great for even more reasons: It's 9 bucks a head to see TWO new-release movies; they let in outside food, so you can bring a picnic if you want (I usually take pizza); and they send the sound out over the radio, so not only can we use our car speakers, which sound good (not awesome, but good), but if my traveling companion goes into one of her (frequent) coughing fits, I can crank up the radio and/or pull out a pocket radio and headphones. www.santeedriveintheatre.com/ for those who want to see how awesome this place is, or those who want to use it as a template in their own home town.

I neglected to mention it up above,but another reason for the drive-in's slow downfall is the introduction of new technology in picture and sound at the chain theaters;the drive-ins,whose presentations are largely subject to the weather,can't afford such updates.
As a kid,I was taken to our local drive-in several times.After I started driving,I only went once...seems the experience wasn't as great as I remember.That particular drive-in closed September 2001,and was demolished the following April.Β
