Look at the comments about TDK before it premiered, and folks said it would be awful because Ledger was a shit casting job.
After he died and the movie premiered, folks were praising it as the best comic movie ever and treating Ledger as the best actor since John Wayne.
Most of the praise for Ledger's mediocre acting (which, in truth, wasn't all his fault, I blame the writing too) was really just folks sad it was his last role.

I wasn't aware that people originally thought Ledger was miscast...I remember,quite vividly,the initial reaction to the news that Michael Keaton was cast as Batman!

Yeah, they thought he was miscast, since his only big role before then was Brokeback Mountain.
