Many of those who are fans of the iconic Disney theme park attraction known as the Haunted Mansion are also familiar with the former/current resident of the Disneyland version known as the Hatbox Ghost...but for those of you who aren't....

When the original version of the ride opened at Disneyland in 1969,the attic scene was home to a particular specter,a skeletal-face figure in a top hat,carrying a large turn-of-the-century hatbox. As riders glided past him,his head would disappear from his shoulders,reappearing in the translucent box...or,at least,that was the intended illusion. Several months later,when it became apparent that the visual trick wasn't working as intended,the ghost was removed from the ride.
Although this was never officially announced at the time,those who remembered it kept its existence alive,eventually carrying over into the internet era. The inevitable speculation as to what happened to the actual figure led others to research,and many discovered that,in all likelihood,it no longer exists in its original form,having been disassembled for spare parts a long time ago.
The aforementioned speculation,however,has many a Mansionphile believing it still exists,spending its days anonymously packed away in some dark,forgotten corner of some Disney-owned warehouse somewhere,still waiting for somebody to stumble upon it. That inspired this piece.

P.S. In 2015,the Hatbox Ghost returned to the Disneyland Mansion,albeit as a new animatronic with an improved version of the original's visual effect.
