Can you really rate season 5 above 1, 2 and 3 based on four episodes?

So far yes. These episodes have all been incredible so far. As I said "at this point" I would rank them that way. THese episodes really beat almost EVERYTHING from the first 3 seasons. Only "Suited for Success", "Return of Harmony", "Too Many Pinkie Pies", and "Sleepless in Ponyville" are the only episodes in the first 3 seasons that rival season 5 so far.

I judge each episode based on the following:
a. How well is the story told
b. Is it entertaining
c. Does it feel like a rehash or not? This can sometimes be yes, but if it is differant enough it can be overlooked
d. Are the characters in character. If not, is there a justified reason?
e. How good is the concept of the episode.

It is true that many people on Twitter are mites, though, so there maybe some truth in the identify of these monsters after all.

I would have given this episode a little higher than a C-, but this is almost probably the most disturbing episode in the whole show for me. Still hope this episode is SOME kind of foreshadowing of the CMC getting their cutie marks in a future episode. And I'm STILL that shocked about Babs getting her own cutie mark already? Maybe we'll see it in person in a future episode?
PS. Who else noticed the random chicken Pinkie Pie for a split second in one shot?

i was disappointed at this episode , went by fast and i expected the cmc to get their cutiemarks , instead it just drags on with applebloom's nightmares

What would you say are the main problems with the episode?

It lacked any sort of exciting element. The only real progression is a letter of Babs' new CM which we don't even get to see, not to mention that a I wasn't expecting a pair of scissors to be her CM anyway. The rest is just stuff we already know. We've seen Luna enter dreams before, we've also seen the CMC worried, etc. In the last episode at lest the castle got some new decor, but this time around we came back from where we started. Anyone watching the series could probably just skip this episode and not have to worry about missing anything important.

I more or less agree with that. It was too repetitive, and since it all was a dream, it's as though nothing really happened. Then again, Sweetie and Scoots were also having nightmares, so in a sense, they all shared the same subconscious message and "actually" happened for them. I think the episode tried to emphasize that the struggle was "all in her head" by having it ALL take place in a dream, but I can't help but feel that it lacked substance. I know that it was an extremely vivid nightmare, but still, it didn't quite impress me. For a while, I thought it was Starlight talking to Applebloom, where she talked about how cutie marks are tied to misfortune, or something along those lines. That would have been exciting; perhaps, after hearing about the "tree-chest-castle-map", she decided to do some investigation and discovered Twilight's castle, and has been sneaking around Ponyville. Maybe she thought of getting into the minds of fillies desperate for their cutie marks to brainwash them into having themselves branded, with her powerful magic? Yes, sounds like a fanfic, but for a while, I could have sworn I heard Starlight.
I think the episode would have been better if we had focused on Babs. It would make the struggle seem more authentic; we could have additionally learned more insight about her relationship to her sister, the two new blank flanks, and the bullies, and how the dynamics rapidly shifted after getting her cutie mark. It would be a "real" version of Applebloom's dream. Oh well, it's okay. ^.^ Hmm, I'm STILL hoping for a Celestia dream episode...
