Description Best kissing scene I've drawn in a long time ... and it's not even my crew! ehehe

Late birthday gift for my beloved bestie
With her characters - Audrina, as sassy princess of all trades who puts all the men in shame with her attitude
- and Noboru, almost as sassy dwarf prince destined to win over her heart! Ah...
dwarf human ships are just too precious!

Happy Birthday EB!
You're the very best!

From ProjectComment

I really like your piece; it looks absolutely beautiful and the scene (if a bit cliche) works very well. I really love how you used vibrant colors together and added some really nice lighting. It makes the whole piece come alive. I think you did an amazing job with the poses and expressions, they look very natural and tell the story well. I also really like the change from regular background to bright white as the princess accepts the kiss and gives in to its bliss. There really is a lot to like about this piece and it shows off your artistic talents very well.

I have to dive into a bit of nitpicking for criticisms, since I like the piece so much. Although I really like the colors and the lighting, there's a bit of a discrepancy between the way the lighting is shown on the characters and the way their shadows reflect on the wall behind them. Looking at the shading on the characters I'd think that the light is coming from the stage-right, but their shadows on the wall imply that the light is coming from (approximately) the viewer's point of view. On the subject of the background; although you did a nice job in making the bricks a bit more varied and adding some variety to the wall; it's still a brick wall. It's a bit dull and makes the scene look more flat. I'm guessing you just in general didn't want to spent too much time on the background, but pushing the wall a bit further back at least would give your characters some more room to breathe. You could also add some small objects to the wall; either they are attached to the wall or just standing between the wall and the camera. These objects could give the viewer a bit more context about the scene; where are the characters and what are they arguing about. Obviously these are details and don't matter too much in the grand scheme of things, but they would give more context and make the background seem less generic.

I do still really love this piece; it just looks amazing. I hope the small points I raised will be helpful to you and I hope you'll keep on producing more wonderful art!

Well it IS one of the best kissing scenes I've drawn ;D

I had a bit of struggle with the shadows on the background 8I I added them because without them the characters didn't pop up that much so I was like "oh well" and bend the rules XD details on the wall might have helped though eheh
Your nitpick is accurate though, since I did intend the light to come from the right.

With the background my original intent was to keep it simple and focus on the characters, plus I ran out of time since this was gift, but I'll keep your suggestions in mind for they are great ones!
Backgrounds are a bit enemy of mine... I really need to start paying more attention to them!

I definitely get you there; I've been trying to improve at backgrounds as well, but they're really tough >.<

The expressions are gold - and I agree that this is the best kissing scene I have seen thus far!

Any tutorial on how to make a comic page like this one ?
I noticed the pattern of the wall is correct despite the zoom changes from first to the second panel...

CuriousCucumber In reply to Novames00 [2018-11-06 21:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Well the secret behind the wall pattern was simply to draw the closer view first - copy and make it smaller for the first panel and then continue drawing
Hmmm.. I've actually never thought of it but I think I have the progress of this one recorded so I could make a speedpaint video at least... but as a tutorial, what you think could be included in it? step by step perhaps?

Ooooooooooh, naruhodo...
It makes sense. I'll think about this technique...
For the comic tutorial, you just have to make sure to teach how to make those panels in a quick way, how to draw within a panel's bounds, and maybe add some tips about coloring...

Well as a matter of fact I usually plan very little of the panels - most often it happens so that I
have a drawing I like and then end up continuing it randomly XD
but I guess an easy tutorial could be done ... whenever I have time
