Description The only truly evil character in all of the Animals of Farthing Wood series, I have a bit of a soft spot for Scarface. Sure, he has a habit of eating various characters (why is it always the females he catches?), he’s nasty to his mate and his son, but his TV persona is about as close to his book character as it is possible to be.

I’ve been told that in the original novels, Scarface and his native fox family were red, but were turned into blue foxes to differentiate them from Fox’s family in the TV series. How true that is I don’t know, since the novel of Fox’s Feud that I have has the cover of Fox and Scarface and the latter is blue. I also read that book before the TV series came out I think, when I was a child.

Anyway, Scarface. I can sympathise with his anger at having to give some of his land to the Farthing animals, and red foxes no less. I can understand his hatred towards Fox and Vixen, but I never believed that he killed Dreamer in the TV series. I can even bet that he was a handsome fox before he got his scar. He’s strong, powerful and an opportunist. All these things, however, don’t detract from the fact that he’s malicious, likes killing other animals, is frustrated by Lady Blue and feels disappointment towards his son Ranger. He's a well rounded, interesting character, more so than Fox ever is.

Incidently, I don’t think Fox would have beaten him in their fight had Whistler and Speedy not intervened. It’s just not cricket to distract your opponent by dropping a pine cone on his head. Especially when Scarface was obviously winning. I also think Scarface’s death is suitable for a warrior like him. To be killed by someone as equally malicious and twisted (Adder, of course) is no bad thing. I think his death was far more poignant and noble than Bold’s was.

I'm not completely happy with this one, I was trying to show him in a real Scarface-type pose, but I'm not convinced it looks entirely like him. Anyway, done with the usual watercolours, resizing it was a real pain since the program I use seems to have gone to pot. And apologies for taking so long in getting this one up, it's very hard to sneakily scan art when my boyfriend is around, since he's not doing his football training at the moment...

Quote of choice: “Nothing but trouble. The stag should never have let them in in the first place.” (Series2)

What I think with Scarface was that he was the fox that the Farthing Fox never got to be himself. He lived his life in a nature preserve all his life and as a result he had nothing to fear, for he got to embrace being at the top of the food chain. Fox would have been no different had he not experienced encounters with humans or had to make the journey to White Deer, and as the named leader of the animals he found that friendship and loyalty is too strong a force to break once you have it.

These moral differences were at the very heart of the feud and why Scarface was unwilling to accept the Farthing Wood animal's presence at the park.

Scarface's actor, John Glover, was a presenter on Who Dares Wins.

hurray for scarface. The pose is great and so is the anatomy. When i was little and watched the TV series, i always assumed that Scarface and his tribe were Silver foxes and when i read the books i still thought the same. It was only when i was told that Scarface was actually a red fox in the book that i thought it was a bit odd that they changed it. Silly me anyway i agree with you. Scarface has to be one of m,y favourites too ^^

Thanks for the comments. Funnily enough, my little sister's been watching the series (she's 6), and she thinks Scarface's family are wolves. So maybe we all have our own interpretations.
