Description I think i have improved a lot!!!!!
the shading is in much more depth and i used tissues instead of my finger for blending. i have also learnt to spend much more time on my drawings so they are more detailed.

this is such a great contest
i am entering into the traditional images group 3.
information about the Kick Your Own @ss contest >>> [link]

the first one (on the left) i did 2 years ago when i was 14 before i joined deviant art.

And 2 years, lots and lots and lots of practice and great advice from the amazing artists here later, i have drawn the much improved version.
so i'd like to thank everyone who has helped me

'Well, I spot some improvement here'

No really, well done! What especially shows off is the amount of time and patience you put in your drawings now. Keep up the good work!

Wow, you've improved a lot, too!! And just in two years... Just to think of the fact that your new drawing was drawn at the same age as my old one... wow
It looks kinda funny how the old drawing leans to the right and the new one more to the left...
If you don't mind a little advice, you still have some "outlines" showing around his jaw, neck and nose. Try to blend those a little more. Have you tried tortillions/paperstumps? They're really good for those kind of things. Also, how many different types of pencil leads do you use? There are still many areas in his face which seem almost pure white, I would try to tone them done with a HB or B pencil except for the brightes highlights. Or maybe adjust your scan settings, I know scanners are evil when it comes to light shading.
Apart from that you're really really good, especially the hair is great.
I can't wait to see what your work will look like when you're my age (Make sure to practice more than I did since if such a thing as talent exists, you definitely have it and you're going to be great. Great as in even greater than now )

thank you so so so much!!!
i know what you mean about them leaning differently but i honestly drew them from the same reference. though i don't think i refered to the reference that much for the first one, looking back on the drawing now.
i would love advice because i really want to keep on improving!!!
i hadn't even noticed the 'outlines' until you mentioned it and i totally see what you mean. i will definitely try to avoid that in the future.
i used to have a blending stump that came with a set of pencils but im not sure where to get more from. i think i will see if i can get some off the internet.
i have four really good pencils which are HB,2B,4B,6B but i don't really use the HB. then i have another set of 6 pencils which go from B to 6B but they aren't very nice to use. i will try to do some more light shading.
thanks a bunch for your amazing comment and all the advice

You're welcome
That's what I thought, looking back I'm really amazed at how off my old drawings were, even when I worked with a reference
I get my blending stumps where I get all my other stuff, at an art supply store. You can also make your own but I don't know how much work that is or how good they are.
You should definitely try to use your HB more, I used to dislike harder pencil leads because the lines were always visible and they can damage the paper if you press too hard, but once I really tried to use them properly (as in many soft close-together pencil strokes) I don't know how I did without them. They are perfect for soft shading. If you use a 2B for that and shade very softly it tends to only catch on the more prominent parts of the paper surface, resulting in a kinda speckled and rough look of the shading. With harder pencils, you have to work more accurately, but you will get very soft and even shading.

Curlie-11 In reply to MagDa-LeNaa [2009-06-30 10:40:29 +0000 UTC]

i finished my exams on the 18th June, i think they went alright but i really want to know what i got and results day isn't until 27th august !!!!!
but holidays are FABULOUS because I have finally got time to draw which is good because my younger sister has photos of lots of celebrities she wants me to draw so she can put them on her wall
i also want to learn some new songs on the piano and make some more cakes i just bought this great cake mould off ebay which is so funny. as soon as i get it i will make a cake so you can see!

I am so glad you're having a good time hon
And don't worry about those results!I'm sure you did great on those examsSince you yourself thought they went well-there's no need to be afraid

I can't wait to see those new celebrity portraits AND the cake! And you play the piano I've always admired people who can play instruments. My uncle's a musician...too bad I didn't somehow get his genes lol

So are you good at playing the piano?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Curlie-11 In reply to MagDa-LeNaa [2009-07-01 09:33:15 +0000 UTC]

i don't know what you'd count as good but i can play a few things and i can play the start of a lot of songs because then i find a new song and start learning that so i rarely learn a song all the way through.
i can play love story by taylor swift and mad by ne-yo and some movie themes from Lord of the rings and gladiator and love actually oh and Pirates of the Carribean(im not sure if thats spelt right i can never remember whether its 2 b's or 2 r's )
i really want to learn the piano from we made it by linkin park and busta rhymes, do you know that song? i think it sounds great. and maybe geek in the pink by Jason Mraz. i love that song
playing the piano is kinda like drawing in the way you have to practice a lot but i really enjoy it
