Description

Forged from 80CrV (A high-carbon steel alloy), this knife features black-dyed curly maple handle scales, nickel silver pins, and piercework decoration.

This was a donation piece to a recent (and quite successful) fundraising event for a local oratorio choir based in New Haven, CT.

This is the first of what I hope to be many more pieces like this, I've been loving using the jeweler's saw lately to make designs. Soon enough I'll be incorporating some carving details as well, and then the pieces will have some real depth.

wow, great piercing. Did you go over it again with small files or were you able to get such clean results first time 'round?

Thanks! I was able to access probably less than half the total surface area with files afterwards, so a lot of what you see was done by using the saw in somewhat unconventional ways after I did the majority of the straight cutting.

Beautiful piece, but wouldn't that carving create a decent weak point on the blade? Did it cause any problems in tempering?

Potentially, yes. I was very careful to only harden the area of the blade beyond the piercework, so theoretically at least the parts within the design are as "soft" as the steel can be. Not heating that area significantly also essentially eliminated the chances of warping when I quenched it in oil.
