Just a question, what size hank do you get? I was on one of the website and I know they have a MLP hank, but it doesn't look like the one you have in the picture.

So for the needle, do you just put a long piece of thread through it and tie it at the end? That bit kinda confused me ><

Dollyhair's mylittleponyhair.com says 1 hank is enough to rehair 1 G1-3 pony. I'm assuming it's the same (or close( for FiM/G4 as well, right? I'm planning on doing a custom pony or 2 for my OC and was curious about the hair.

g1/g3 are MUCH bigger than g4. they are about the size of fashion style g4s, if that helps.

This sounds fun to do! ^-^ I don't have any good ponies that I'm willing to turn into customs, though. I'll ask for some for Christmas? XD

Sorry, I'm really too busy to do many of my own customs let alone ones to sell. There are plenty of others who could sell you customs if you look around DA though, I'm sure.

Please forgive me, but for the life of me I can't figure this out. Where does the needle go after it gets pushed through the neck? Does it get pulled along with the hair plug and come out the top?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CustomAnon In reply to RocketToInsanity [2012-08-23 20:44:49 +0000 UTC]
The needle should be pulled off the loop after it passes through the neck.

Thank you this was very helpful to restoring a pony, most of them are okay. But the rainbow dash was horrid, that's the one I have to fix :/

So, I have never once rehaired a doll before. But for reasons unknown, even by me, I am willing to put myself through all this torment for a custom pony. I just have a couple questions:
1. Did you knot each plug yourself, or can you buy them that way?
2. Are the heads turnable after reasembling?
3. How long does the entire project take, including rehairing and painting?
Thank you for posting these tutorials and making them so easy to understand!

Tillefa In reply to Khartria [2012-05-04 17:27:48 +0000 UTC]
1.I don't know if you can buy plugs ready knotted, but it's easy enough. I suggest using a bit of clear nail varnish to seal them.
2. I imagine if you put the plug back in the neck, let the glue dry, and then put the head back on, all should be fine. (I haven't got to this part yet).
3. I started work on my pony yesterday, and I'll probably finish her either today or tomorrow. So about three days? Rerooting the mane definitely takes the longest if you ask me.
Not the author, but thought I'd offer some answers anyways.

Thanks! Already started on a Derpy and Spitfire, and wasted a whole weekend putting layers after layers of paint. I should finish in a couple of days as well, maybe Wed. I didn't think about the plastic in the neck.

Would polypropylene hair be alright to use? Dollyhair.com's having a sale with the colour "daring", and it looks good to use for Carrot Top.

Been working on a G4 as a Christmas present, can't figure out how to do the hair! >.< The head is just too small, my needle doesn't even want to go through the holes. Thanks for the idea of the pushpin! Found your page by typing 'how do i customize a g4' into google. It's been a big help!

If you've done the tail already, it's like that.
Though I'm having problems keeping the thread knot on the hair (oddly enough). Is there a bigger version of the plug picture?
In case your wondering what happened exactly, Custom annon, I attempted to follow this tutorial for the mane. but after i pulled the plug through, the knot came off.

CustomAnon In reply to Secrets-Of-Paranoia [2011-08-22 00:22:24 +0000 UTC]
It's the 38 inch skein listed under "Nylon hair for MLP" -- it should be enough to do at least two ponies with regular length hair.
