Description
on the way back from somewhere off la cienega ... oh ... yeah ... it was from the lodge ... a swank steakhouse on la cienega ...i take side streets to my agency office to drop off my work. it's kind of in the underbelly of hollywood-west. not west hollywood but the westside of hollywood. there's some type of public benefit organization in this area of grip and light rental houses, studios and other support-oriented businesses.
one sees many odd things. dumpster divers. transvestite hookers. other kinds of hookers i've not yet named or identified.
but ... i'm cruising down this street and i see an abandoned wheelchair. i slowed. reversed. and kinda checked the area. didn't see anyone. just a dark-ass street. lonliness. it was about 1.00a. i wondered how far someone could get if they were normally wheelchair bound. they obviously got pretty far as i didn't see anyone in the hundred yard radius i was looking.
again, i was rather afraid to ask what happened.
leica mp. 35/1.4 summilux. f/1.4. 1/30th. ilford delta 400 (pushed +2 to 1600).
*ILFORD IS FILM. THIS IMAGE IS ANALOGUE. THIS IS NOT A PS CONVERSION.*
*YES ... THERE IS SCANNER NOISE. I DON'T FRIGGIN' CARE. I'M NOT RESCANNING THIS ON MY PERSONAL SCANNER. IF I MADE A PRINT, IT WOULD LOOK COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.*

Woah, strong feeling of detachment here. It looks akward... it's so shiny, yet so lonely. Weird. I think I really like this.
I was wondering... by "pushed +2" do you mean you set the aperture 2 up when you printed it? I'm not so familiar with the English terms, but I am curious.

It is so incredibly lonely looking. And I think the dust gives it more feeling, even if it is a byproduct of scanning.
The intensity of the street lights is a great effect also. My new favorite of your photographs.

Hey chris, got some good news, i've found an old 40mm autofocus lens that works with my pentax d-slr, along with an autofocus 28-80mm zoom lens, but i have to work that manually, finding that must have saved me at least Β£200

I love Photojournalism photographs, because of the stories they tell. This one scares me.

Very weird photo.
The wheelchair seems so clinical, so foreign, against the backdrop of suburbia - it's sinister

Like the shot, I also like that it and many other of your works do not have that pristine look to them if im making sense?
While looking at it, I start to wonder how many people passed it and did not notice it.Or Saw it and did not give it a second thought.

that's the kind of thing i'd mull over.
like i still wonder about this one shoe, door handle, and hairband collage strewn against a suburban curb last year.

Ahhh, weird. But lucky shot. I like it.
I would have kind of liked to see this a little more closer, though. I mean, closer in on the wheelchair. A more fixed focus I guess you could say? Maybe a little brighter too, but I guess that whole night thing would have gotten in the way.
Ether way, its still a v cool shot.

interesting....i really enjoy how the light reflected off the steel frame of the wheelchair. it gave the wheelchair a "pasted" look. but i like it.
was that scanned from neg on a flatbed? if so...ouch. if not...ouch...

It has a very eerie feel to it.

i would have taken the wheelchair...
i would love to have one!...and they are a bit pricey to buy...
but then again unless i was with someone i dont think i would have liked to get out of my car in this area?
maybe just thrown out a chain and towed it for a safe while then chuck it in the back when it was safe...
very intereseting area?

such a strange place... I never go there at night. I have taken an adventurous drive through Watts before though. I wanted to see the towers.

Thats very, very very strange.
'only in hollywood!'
heheh.
I find wheneve i get film scanned... i have to do at least levels on the scan, otherwise it looks really, really faded.
'bout the only down side of film, i guess
(or not having a darkroom)

So many things come to mind, different conclusions to why would anybody leave a wheelchair on a dark lonely street......
Scary

If I had to push a wheelchair all over that crappy ass pavement, I might give it up too. Major road works needed.
Love the highlighted reflections on the chair.

In some very bizzare way this seems to be the coIn a bizarre sort of wayβ¦ even though this picture, this place is hundreds of miles away from the hurricane ravaged zonesβ¦this seems to be a commentary on whatβs going on , perhaps all over the world. As if it symbolizes a broken and lost person who has vanished, or been forgotten even though there are βlightsβ or βsigns of lifeβ all around.
A person can still get lost.
(sorry to be all brooding I guess itβs just whatβs on my mind)

i love the creepiness of this, and the random wheelchair, it cracks me up for no apparent reason.
what i like so much about your work is that, theres the job things you got goin on and this random 'picture-pops-up-at-any-given-monet-thing' thats my ideal in photography, capturing a moment
awesome
