This boot is made for hoppin'
And that's just what it'll do
One of these days this boot is gonna hop all over you
---------------
"A few days ago I was in the kitchen, cooking up some scrambled eggs and toast, when Zoey seemingly appeared out of nowhere and started excitedly telling me about this old YouTube video she had found the night before. So, whenever Zoey starts talking about a video she found, she's giving us a not-so-subtle hint that she's just dying to show it to us. And while I usually stop and take time to see whatever it is Zoey's found, I was starving that morning, so I told her I'd take a look at it after breakfast (plus, most of the videos Zoey finds are just puppies and kitties doing cute things, she loves that kind of stuff)."
"Now, whenever one of us tells Zoey we'll look at her video later, she's typically understanding (though she'll usually go see if she can find one of the others to show them instead). But for some reason, Zoey started insisting that she show me the video right then. And before I got a chance to ask her what was so special about this video (as I was currently shoveling a spoonful of scrambled eggs in my mouth), she promptly told me that this video wasn't like all the 'cute animal' videos she usually shows us...and that when she saw this video, she immediately thought it was something that I (and I alone) would find quite interesting."
"I'll admit, she kinda got my attention with that last part. I mean, what about this video would be interesting to me but NOT the others? So, feigning slight annoyance for having my breakfast interrupted, I asked Zoey to pass me her phone (as she already had the video loaded and ready). I was about to click 'Play" when my attention was immediately drawn to the video's title: This Boot is Made for Hoppin . Now, given my love of music, my mind immediately thought of an old song called 'These Boots are Made for Walkin,' and sure enough, when I started the video, it was a close-up shot of a young woman dancing and singing along to the song."
"Confused, I asked Zoey WHY she thought I'd find this video interesting...only for her to cryptically reply to just keep watching. So, rather than get annoyed with Zoey and possibly start a fight, I let the video keep playing as I took a bite out of my toast. By about a minute in, the video had zoomed out a bit, now showing the young woman from the waist up, but...I still didn't get why Zoey wanted me to see this. It wasn't until just after halfway through the video that I finally understood WHY the video was titled the way it was...and WHY Zoey had wanted me to see it."
"As the camera zoomed out once again, I could finally see that the young woman in the video was actually an above-knee amputee, hopping along on her one leg as she danced to the music. And when the video finally ended about a minute later, Zoey started telling me that when she saw the video, she immediately thought of me because--but before she could say anymore, I quickly cut her off, telling her to meet me outside in 15 minutes. When Zoey asked me why, all I told her was that I had a fun idea..."
"Finishing my breakfast, I quickly got up, headed back to my room and started digging through my closet. Fortunately, it didn't take me long to find the black dress and matching boot I was looking for. After changing into my newly-discovered outfit (and removing my prosthetic leg, since I wouldn't need it for this), I grabbed my phone, my crutches, and made my way to our backyard, where Zoey was eagerly waiting for me to fill her in about this 'fun idea' i had..."
"I explained to Zoey that if the young woman in the video could dance as well as she did on one leg, then there was no reason I couldn't do the same, you know? And since Heather and Lauren weren't around at the moment, I figured Zoey could use my phone to record the whole thing so I could show it to them later. So, after queuing up the original song on her phone, I handed Zoey my phone and got into position at the top of the steps. A few seconds later, Zoey started both the music and the recording. And when she did I let myself get lost in the music and started dancing, occasionally hopping down one of the steps of the backyard path."
"Mercifully, the song reached its end after a few minutes, becuase....whew, lemme tell you, dancing on one leg takes a lot out of you, you know? Anyways, as I was sitting on the steps, catching my breath, I sincerely thanked Zoey for showing me the video. And even though I tired to hide it, I...well, I started tearing up a bit. I could tell from the look on Zoey's face that she was a bit concerned when she saw my tears, so I explained to her that the video (and subsequent attempt at recreating it) helped reinforce something I typically have to remind myself of every morning: being 'differently-abled' does NOT make me 'disabled,' and that I can do anything an able-bodied person can do (even if I have to do it a little bit differently)."
"Zoey's concern quickly turned to joy and relief when I told her that. Apparently the whole reason she had shown me the video was because she wanted to inspire me to try something new. I mean, sure, I've always loved listening to music, but actually dancing? Well, it's something I've never really considered trying, you know? But, honestly...I'm kinda glad I did, it's actually pretty fun once you get going. And since Zoey didn't want to be left out of the fun, she queued up her favorite playlist (full of the upbeat, high-energy pop songs she loves) and we spent the next hour or so just dancing and having fun...until Lauren showed up unexpectedly and decided to have a little 'fun' of her own...
