Description Pre-Deflector Starship:
One of the first starships built post First Contact was the LX-01.  Designed to explore the solar system and initially only capable of reaching warp 1, approx 300,000 km/s (lightspeed) this design was sturdy and reliable.  They had no artificial gravity and had to carry supplies for exercise like on the International space station or land and rely on the local gravity of where they visited, like the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.  The bridge was more like a big cockpit and they relied on communication with earth to help plan missions and navigate.

When work began to upgrade these to warp 2 (old scale: 2^3*speed of light), the increase from 300,000 km/s to 2,400,000 km/s introduced some issues.  Using a subspace bubble to warp space drastically reduces the power requirement (to less than the mass of Jupiter), but also creates a form of turbulence (hence the stress of high warp on later designs) that attracts particles into the bubble.  Up to warp 1 this can be mitigated by rotating the subspace bubble, diverting the particles away from the centre and therefore the ship. Above warp 1 the rotation required increases exponentially with the velocity making it more difficult to maintain. On top of this the ships began having trouble scanning ahead of themselves above warp 1 and with plans to venture beyond our solar system, this was needed as support from earth to pre-plan would become less useful due to light delay.
