Concept work and Lach-ysithudh (Ysith) of the Laughing Swarm by

Some loose sketchwork to get back into the whole 'retro' future. Never thought I'd be designing a Chinese take on the Nostromo.

Good luck with that. Do you know how old that ship was when we all saw it for the first time in Alien?!

I can't recall offhand, but wasn't it either 70 or 200 years old?

The PLA ship interiors are inspired by the visual styling of that era of scifi. Hard science, low tech displays, glowing buttons, exposed wires, and a bit of rock and roll. certainly knows how to make a solid feeling universe. I just do what little I can to help.

Actually the main halls are 2.5 meters tall. Even Ysith has a bit of room to spare. Probably a bit spacious for spaceship interiors, but they do make it easier to illustrate.

I actually recall some of your early pencil works you showed me at one point previously. Cool stuff indeed.

I used to do pages and pages of these props and bits of internal detail for look-dev for previous projects. It's fun to return to them every so often.

A PLA 'Nostromo' 'eh? Sounds cool. I like the concepts, I could model from these images, lovely work.

Ya, that's the intended purpose of them. I'm trying to break down even the sub assets into reusable props. The padded paneling will have multiple damage states, that I can swap between, the framework will also have interchangeable elements.

So if I'm looking at this right... it's basically a frame with a possible backing/lack of backing made of certain sized chunks that can be placed in and such? Cause this got me going on a modular asset kick actually in 3DSMax lol.

Going to link a wiki page, of people that know more about this than I. wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Modula…

I've only ever really been responsible for producing the concept art, and some limited greyblock meshes. The principle is sound though; build you large pieces to snap to a grid, using whole value unit sizes. Ensure you have enough pieces to answer the needs of the level artist (you in this case).

ah I see fair enough, and that picture was really helpful by the way in getting some stuff I was having issues with sorted!Β

And yeah, it's me and my friend, because currently we're using UE4 assets for blockout but we'll eventually need our own soon enough. who produces the 3d art on your guys stuff then?

What stuff are you referring to? If you're talking about the meshes in this deviantart gallery, all the art here is done by me. I use mixture of Cinema4d and ZBrush.

The Angels Fall First project, I was part of a much larger team, a partial list of the people who were part of it can be found in my journal here -> Angels Fall First

Ah I didn't know you worked on Angels Fall first until I took a closer look.Β

i mainly meant in regards to the PLA and other stuff you have in your gallery involving the characters and such.

Very cool! I like seeing multi-damage states in games, it lets me know the developers went the extra mile to really think about what's "under the surface" of their world.
