And now for something completely different...a dog! A bit of a change from all those cats This is my Aunty's Golden Retriever, Gemma. I decided I wanted to paint a dog and asked my Aunty for some photos - this painting is taken from two photos of Gemma (one of her face and one for the ear), both of which were taken in a pub so I had to use some creative license with the lighting! The background was replaced by a pretty meadow and the leg was originally a chair she was leaning on.

She's really white, which was a challenge as I kept going too dark with the golden brown tones in her fur and having to lighten it up again. I tried going loose with the background rather than putting my usual level of detail into it - I've been trying to work on doing 'proper' backgrounds which look natural and don't detract from the main focus.

I timed this one - it took me just under 16 hours (which seems like a lot now that I look at the result...hmm). In that time I listened (and became addicted) to the entire first book of Harry Potter and part of the second one I never read them when I was younger but I love listening to Steven Fry reading it while I paint

This painting will be making it's way to my Aunty as a Christmas present She's not on dA though, so I think I'm safe posting it early (I usually like to wait until after it's been received but I can't wait that long! )
