WOW! pretty cool! my girlfriend (PhotoNutz46) took a picture of a fly the other day, and didn't know what it was, and I identified it as a robberfly. It's nowhere near as magnified as yours, but I think it turned out pretty good! There's a picture of it at this [link] If you like it, please leave her a nice comment. Thank you! Again, a wonderful picture!

Cool robber fly shot! I have yet to find one with prey.

really? cool! yeah, my girlfriend was out taking pictures of bumblebees, and we were by her grapes, and I happened to see this strange looking fly land on a grape leaf, and just sit there. I got her attention, and told her there was this strange looking fly if she wanted to take a picture of it. It was only later while looking at the picture on the computer that we discovered it had an insect in it's jaws! We think it may have been an aphid. She has a small vegetable garden, and aphids are known to frequent gardens, sucking juices from them, hurting the plants. So I'm pretty sure it's an aphid. I only learned last night it was in fact a robber fly. I looked up predatory flies on google, saw a picture of what looked like her fly, and learned that it was in fact a robber fly. I love my girlfriends pictures of flowers, clouds and insects. she is now gearing up to take online classes through the Art Institute to get a bachelors degree in photography! She's always love photography, and is so enthusiastic in her passion for it! I support her 100% and hope eventually she is happily snapping away, and it would be awesome if her pictures get featured in magazines! She loves your close up pictures of insects, and badly wants a more complex camera with macro lenses. She thinks your stuff is so "cool"! Keep clicking away at those insects! your pictures are great! Thank you, dalantech! Thank you from her in advance!

Thanks for the support!

I'm not sure that it's an aphid though -they are usually pretty small. Hard to say what the robber is feeding on from the angle -they'll take down just about anything!

well it's some form of insect, whatever it is. The robber fly wasn't very big himself. Maybe an inch, an inch and a half long.

An aphid would be a few millimeters long

I can see how that would wear a fly out.

My finger -I was using the camera one handed by resting the lens against my left hand to keep it steady.
