Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Conan the Barbarian #79 - I got this in one of those old bagged 3-packs in the late 70s or some such along with Avengers 164 and an issue of Power Man.
The original cover was created by John Buscema and Ernie Chan, copyright Marvel Comics.
Here is the original cover: [link] (British!)

Bloody Marvelous (no pun intended!) I think you would have been an amazing inker for John B. Like Alcala.

Thanks, Antonio! They're a nice break in between 'real' comic pages.

I loved them old bagged packs. Classic comics came my way through those packs way back when.

Wouldn't it be fun if comic stores did that with their quarter bins? I'd buy sealed bagged packs of pre-1986 comics that way. But they'd need to use some sort of cool printed header on the plastic bag that said "Hey Kids, COMICS! 3 for $0.99!" with a hole/grommet to hang 'em on a peg, or else it just wouldn't be the same.

Yes, yes and yes. I miss that awesome deal. And you'd get comics you totally didn't expect! Like, the Specter or something! I have some WEIRD comics thanks to those bagged deals.

The reproductions are so much like the original, it's probably like owning the original pages. I hope you're hanging these up in your house.

Yeah, this series of repros I'm doing is out of a desire to have something close to being an original (although I'm drawing in all the logos instead of using pasteups) for a bunch of covers that harken back to my early collecting days. I plan to hang up 3 at a time and maybe rotate them in/out for fun.

Very good work. Do you copy them from the original or do you ink over the Buscema pencil?

I blow up the original and use a lightbox to do the logos and whatnot, and trace the contours in pencil - then I ink using the original cover as a guide. Thanks!

If I didn't know any better I'd say it was all Buscema/Chan, amazing art here. I really love how this one came out. You did such a great job.

Thanks, Larry. Since I'm trying to get as close to a copy of the original as I can, I don't need to use much imagination.

You do a great ghosting. There is a need for more Buscema in the world. That clan can't do no wrong.
