I wonder why Dmitry din't make the Rangers,Nazi's and Red Line soldiers use Makarov's and MP443 Grach's as their sidearm. I mean there might be available ones in good/perfect after the nukes fell.

Actually, I'm not sure if Grach exists in the timeline of Metro. In "Enter the Metro", for example, we can see soldier uniforms - and in 2013 they are Soviet. In out timeline MP-443 Grach was developed after the fall of Soviet Union, but I'm not sure if Fall of USSR occurred in Metro Universe. However, trials for new handgun were announced in 1990, before the Fall of USSR... So, as I said, I'm not sure.
They could use PM, and I don't know why they don't... PM is very durable, and ammunition is plentiful...
And the origin of this revolver I don't know at all. Unlike Americans, Russians don't praise revolvers, and our laws don't allow the purchase of handguns at all. .44 calibre was used for some time, but it was .44 Russian, and it was before the Fall of Russian Empire, like, century ago. Something like .41 revolver would be far more believable, .410 smoothbore is pretty popular, and fullmetall casings for it are rather plentiful, but .44..?

Let's all say that they might use Makarov's since its durable and the cartridge can punch through Mutants in just few hits.The revolver for some reason resembles a Colt Python due to its pistol grip and barrel.The Grach was present in 2003 so its possible that there was available units of this,I'd imagine Ulman or Miller holding one.
I find it weird that Hunter in the book carries a suppressed Stechkin APS,ingame he just holds and uses the 44 Magnum as his sidearm,that also goes with every NPC's and enemies
Also the Lolife is influenced by old pistols such as the Mauser and Bergmann

Why would people with ram-shackled guns make a super tough, expensive to make 44 magnum revolver as the simplest sidearm?
Because the game was made in a nation, that I am pretty sure doesn't allow ordinary people to even own revolvers.
So, their lack of knowledge is to be expected.

Well... The reason they used revolvers I can explain - reliability. When you make guns from shit and sticks, you'll think twice before using, for example, blowback design.
For me far more curious is the fact they used .44 Magnum there - the cartridge never ever used by Russia or USSR, and never popular - no thanks to local weapon laws, pretty much prohibiting anything smaller then shotgun for civilian owning. The last and only known .44 cartridge, used in Russia, was .44 Russian for Smith & Wesson No. 3, adopted in 1869 and discarded in 1915.

Wouldn't a .38 revolver be easier to hide, vastly easier to use and much more reliable?

I guess, yes. And not some random .38, but 9x18mm Makarov - it would be logical. Revolvers, using this cartridge, exist.
Maybe, they should not watch Eastwood so much.

If anything, they should have made a version with the stock, long barrel and a silencer that fit over the barrel so it would have the same length as normal.
