Description
I came up with the idea for this tutorial a while ago, when I was giving drawing workshops on another convention.I noticed that a lot of beginning artists that I met actually made the same type of mistakes.
The mistakes listed here are the ones that I used to make as well, when I was younger.
Things that took me quite the time to learn, because these are the things people often don't tell you.
I can still remember having an Eureka moment when I discovered these simple things. I hope you will have the same.
(PS: this tutorial is aimed towards beginners in art. If you're advanced, you might know this already)
Just to rule out a few things:
This tutorial is based on the workshops I've given at conventions over the last 2 years. It's a quick how-to (will fit in an 1 hour workshop), rather than an effort to explain EVERYTHING.
Most of those workshops were given at conventions, to kids. The average target group is amateur artists between 8 and 20 years old.
I realize that some mistakes are manga-style-issues. Yet I think it doesn't hurt to know how things should be done.
To the bunch of angry (aspiring) pro-artists that got to me: It's NOT aimed towards professional artists (or aspiring pro's). It's aimed towards amateur artists (mostly kids) that need motivation, rather than someone telling them "this is how it should be done. Copy it". I know it works this way in art school. It doesn't work that way in elementary school, and that's for a reason. It's is a teaching-thing.
I used my own art in this tutorial, not because I do EVERYTHING right. But because I wanted to show much difference small things can make.
The book mentioned about color theory is "Color & light" by James Gurney. It's a long read, but interesting, though.
Many people told me the model was Keira Knightly. I know now. I just got her by googling 'random model picture', though XD
I know there are mistakes. I'm not a native English person, and I usually teach in Dutch.

> if you wanted/needed to,… you could definitely sell, and for a high price
I kinda know so. The most important thing to selling art is marketing it. And as I have a pretty solid marketing background (due to the jobs I had) it would probably be possible
> I really wish I could switch places with you right now, even if only for a while
Oh, believe me. I have a pretty thick skin.
I wrote the 'rant' journal mostly because I wanted to send a message, and I knew that many people would read it (and hopefully take it to heart).
The message that saying things like 'you should die' or 'go hang yourself' is not okay. And that it's never justified, no matter how popular a person gets.
> I ended up getting a few hate messages, and couldn't handle it and kept running away
And that's the thing that I will refuse; running away. Because it doesn't solve shit.
> I think you should just not ask for critique
I think people should learn the difference between critique and bashing.
Getting praise alone is not getting you anywhere either ^^
> People are usually angry for a reason. They probably have issues in their life, and are taking it out on you
Believe me. I know. But it's no reason of taking your anger out on anyone. And people should know that.
> I probably seem like a complete jerk
Don't worry. I don't judge so soon.
I can't promise I'll remember you in a few years. And that's not hard, but just honest. It's hard keeping up with 20k people and remembering them all (especially when they switch accounts). But I'm sure I'll see you around

This was so insanely helpful. I never realized the whole "no cheeks" thing, something I'm guilty of! Needless to say, this makes me want to go back to my dorm room and practice.

I'm saving this! O.O But I do have a question. I always seem to have difficulty when creating the creases in clothing. I've known about making creases for awhile, after reading a realism drawing tip book, but I can't seem to figure out where and how to draw them correctly.

You do realize that by correcting this anime stuff you are saying every art style is anime, right? That's just how most anime art styles go, you are trying to correct what there is no need to, unless if someone wants to get into more realism.

There's nothing wrong with the side-nose, it's just a stylized way of outlining the side of the nose so it isn't too prominent. It has nothing to do with being cheap. The thin cheeks are also a style choice, and not even that different from the reference photo. In fact, for thin characters it could be very useful, depending on the angle of the face. Other than that, you made some good points about lighting and creasing.

> It has nothing to do with being cheap
It's often done so on purpose because it's fast and simple, and therefore cuts production costs of anime/manga

Simplicity can be good if you want your art style to be more streamlined. Some artists prefer to have an efficient use of lines. It's not inherently right or wrong, just a different way of doing things.

DamaiMikaz In reply to JesseWFDusk [2014-03-04 15:23:35 +0000 UTC]
But in the case of manga/anime, it's actually done because of production costs.
It's not wrong. What is wrong, however, that it's taught to many people in such a way. Many how-to-draw manga books just teach you to draw the element. Not why you draw things that way.

So, sincerely, thank you.

I disagree with some things. I believe drawing has no limits, so some of these things can work just fine because it's a choice of style. Like the nose thing? Eichiiro Oda (One piece ) draws those side noses and it looks just fine.
This tutorial is usefull, but applies to people who want more realism in their drawings.
So I guess this tutorial is aimed at people who want to have a more realistic style like yours?
Usefull none the less, but I just wanted to point this out.

DamaiMikaz In reply to Lavux [2014-03-04 12:56:29 +0000 UTC]
Not particularly.
The realism is put in to make people understand why certain things are the way they are.
Anime is based on realism, actually ^^

Lavux In reply to DamaiMikaz [2014-03-04 13:05:30 +0000 UTC]
Every style is based of realism, but you can distort it as you like. It is true you first need to have an understanding of realistic proportions to do this.

Though I'd like to say a thing to the nose thing... As someone who's kinda guilty of this, but out of very own accord, I found the term "cheap anime" kinda hurtful there.

Cheap anime as 'cheap' in the sense this is done to cut production costs

While I could agree that this might be possible in some cases, I definitely wouldn't say it's always like that. But if that's how you meant it, okay. Didn't mean to attack you or something.

Once you had a look inside the anime business you would been surprised about how much works like that. I think Ghibli movies are some of the few exceptions when it comes to animation, but most anime is shaded quick and faces are purposefully made look similar to animation shots can be used multiple times.

this was awsome and if i keep it in mind, im sure it will help me be better and the only thing i have to say with the creases in the clothes, is that, for me, i never know HOW to put them there. i know i have to and such, but when ive tried it never looked right.. like i dont know how long they should be, how many in one spot. things like that..
any further advice?

The first two topics just seem like "lets flame manga/anime and realism is the master race", but the other parts from there seem like geniune mistakes.
Those two are a question of style, and the second example you posted on that cheek one, has a cheek. If you dont see it there, im sorry but that aint realism. That is manga style, not the realistic manga or the manga with little tweaks. The side nose is wrong, but in art school i was taught it was wrong too. It is an easy way to make the nose stand out, but you have to differentiate the SHADE of the nose that quite alot of artists do, and the actual nose itself. Dont call it cheap anime just because you dont like the way they draw noses.
Other than that, everything seems well made. Well done!
