Description I came up with the idea for this tutorial a while ago, when I was giving drawing workshops on another convention.

I noticed that a lot of beginning artists that I met actually made the same type of mistakes.

The mistakes listed here are the ones that I used to make as well, when I was younger.

Things that took me quite the time to learn, because these are the things people often don't tell you.

I can still remember having an Eureka moment when I discovered these simple things. I hope you will have the same.

(PS: this tutorial is aimed towards beginners in art. If you're advanced, you might know this already)

Just to rule out a few things:

This tutorial is based on the workshops I've given at conventions over the last 2 years. It's a quick how-to (will fit in an 1 hour workshop), rather than an effort to explain EVERYTHING.

Most of those workshops were given at conventions, to kids. The average target group is amateur artists between 8 and 20 years old.

I realize that some mistakes are manga-style-issues. Yet I think it doesn't hurt to know how things should be done.

To the bunch of angry (aspiring) pro-artists that got to me: It's NOT aimed towards professional artists (or aspiring pro's). It's aimed towards amateur artists (mostly kids) that need motivation, rather than someone telling them "this is how it should be done. Copy it". I know it works this way in art school. It doesn't work that way in elementary school, and that's for a reason. It's is a teaching-thing.

I used my own art in this tutorial, not because I do EVERYTHING right. But because I wanted to show much difference small things can make.

The book mentioned about color theory is "Color & light" by James Gurney. It's a long read, but interesting, though.

Many people told me the model was Keira Knightly. I know now. I just got her by googling 'random model picture', though XD

I know there are mistakes. I'm not a native English person, and I usually teach in Dutch.

THANK you! There is loads of pepole that dosen't understand that anime and manga are different kinds of drawing style! Anime/manga is supposed to show the features of the body simplyfied !personaly i am drawing anime but i like realism too don't think i'm just taking one side , anyway i don't know why i wrote this but have a great day!

Gyzra In reply to Pantelda [2014-03-02 22:27:33 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it's against manga. I think it reminds beginners (who it is aimed at) that they should look at realism first and then deviate from there. If you then choose that you personally want to have a side pointed nose (like the TV anime's often do) then that's your own style choice, but you have done it consciously and should know how to do it correctly. The same for the cheek thing. A lot of people just copy and then wonder why it doesn't look right and I feel like this addresses that. There are many forms of anime and manga, some are highly realistic (yuumei's fish eye placebo) and others are incredibly simplified (Lucky Star) None are better than the others, but it should always be a conscious choice what the style is going to look like and why.

RepeatingDigits In reply to Gyzra [2014-03-03 03:52:14 +0000 UTC]

The artist should have added those points, because its seriously flaming manga right there.

Yuumei's style is a hybrid of realism and manga, to the point where its much more than a hyper realistic manga. (I have seen his comics before.)

Yes, then the artist should have added that instead of saying this is right, and this is wrong. He didnt specify if it was a mistake or a case of style. Anime is a simplified form of realism, and not a mere inferior to realism just because it doesnt specifically obey all the anatomy of the realism style.

Yuumei is a she, and the artist who wrote this tutorial is also a she. What DamaiMikaz states in some of the comments I've read is that they usually do the simplified manga style to cut production costs, which is actually true. I mean make the comparison to some of the manga's you read to the anime you watch and see how different it is, she's not bashing the manga style she's telling you that if you wanna keep true to the semi-realistic/manga style or whatever you'd call it then it's good to use some reference pictures so you can actually get facial proportions corrected, but hey everyone has their own style so either take her advice or just keep doing your own thing. It's not like she's forcing you to do shit.

RepeatingDigits In reply to ScorpioKun [2014-03-07 23:44:26 +0000 UTC]

I didnt know that, and im not insecure for that either.
She should have specified it then other than calling it "CHEAP" anime, because nowadays its a pretty offensive word to use. She is not forcing me to do anything, but she sent that message that doing THIS is right, and THIS is wrong, no style exceptions. The description mentions that she does not mean to flame anime, but people who only see the picture might go off in the wrong foot.

ScorpioKun In reply to RepeatingDigits [2014-03-08 22:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah true, she should re word it from it saying "THIS IS RIGHT" and "THIS IS WRONG" to "try this method", but to be honest after reading the tutorial I actually improved a bit when it came to facial features and clothing wrinkles, I think that people who are currently bitching in the comments should at least give this method a try before shoving in their two cents.

RepeatingDigits In reply to ScorpioKun [2014-03-09 03:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Meh, i didnt learn much from facial features, i dont like the way the cheeks look so i make them nice and flat. I dont like how realism looks, for me its horrid and incredibly hard. But clothing wrinkles on my mangas? Absolutely, need those all day all night.

I need to save that picture with the folds in the clothing or something... I know that clothes fold but I can never figure out HOW. @.@

This is really cool! I also read "Color & Light" by James Gurney, and I thought it was extremely helpful.

i think many young amateur artists's drawing style firstly is influenced by manga & anime style ( big shimmering eyes and tiny nose) probably because it looks cute and easy to draw and there is nothing wrong with this manga style in case you are not a REAL artist and just draw for fun regardless of a whole lots of color/humanface theory.

This got quite a few giggles out of me.    And the realization that there are at least a few beginner's mistakes I don't do. (However, I'm guilty of drawing no cheeks and shading too carefully)
Thank you very much for sharing this with us! Your tutorial was well-structured and I learned a few new things as well. Good job!

I love this, I definitely learned some things! I always thought about that nose thing but I never knew how else to draw a nose. *shrugs* I've also always been bugged by the lack of wrinkles in my older drawings. My new ones aren't that great with wrinkles either but at least they have them, haha. I like to try and use reference but it's not always easy to find a picture of a person in the right position.

About choosing a reference, here is a funny story:
We were told to choose from pictures of a TV guide and I don't joke here, EVERYONE made their tryout picture of one of those Photoshopped celebrity. I was the only one who has chosen to draw a) from a very tiny preview picture and making it bigger and to b) do someone who looked totally out of proportion but had a really challenging appearance for such a starter like I was.
Just to give the example, this one was it : inistrife.deviantart.com/art/S…
I had a lot of fun with it and the teacher was kinda impressed that I didn't go with the flow and with the line on my tongue "To easy!" as I was asked why not one of those other 'pretty' people got to be my tryout.

can you do a tutorial if you haven't done one already on where to place creases cos I never know where on earth to place them

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DamaiMikaz In reply to Xinros [2014-03-02 12:15:45 +0000 UTC]

I think there are already many tutorials about that on DA.

I, myself, tend to use photo's as a reference, though

MoeMoney123 In reply to DamaiMikaz [2014-03-02 12:41:28 +0000 UTC]

How do you use the photo's as reference? Do you come up with a pose from imagination/reference then look for someone wearing a clothing that creases similarly to how the pose is?

DamaiMikaz In reply to MoeMoney123 [2014-03-04 09:13:56 +0000 UTC]

Either same pose or the same clothing ^^

MoeMoney123 In reply to DamaiMikaz [2014-03-06 02:09:16 +0000 UTC]

Well that is a lot of work. I use a similar method and it takes me forever to find the right reference image.

DamaiMikaz In reply to MoeMoney123 [2014-03-06 07:27:59 +0000 UTC]

MoeMoney123 In reply to DamaiMikaz [2014-03-08 23:32:22 +0000 UTC]

So you would use two poses that are similar  kinda like this?

Sheelaflower In reply to Xinros [2014-03-02 12:00:47 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that's possible. The only way to learn where to put creases is by experience. The best way is to try and draw people that you see irl or draw clothes you see in photos. The more you draw, the more you are able to imagine what creases will look like if you draw something of your own. It takes a lot of time to learn, but you will eventually.
