I'm a big fan of Lovecraft and Call Of Cthulhu is probably my favourite story so it is really cool to see your vision of the character. Great blending work to construct the body and you pulled the flames off well.

The cthulhu mythos is a creation of H.P.Lovecraft. Cradle of filth just use it like many other black/death metal bands, movies etc.

I'd always wondered where Cthulhu actually came from.
I always just assumed that it was some old myth from some old culture that I just didn't know of.
Oh, The Things We Learn At deviantART...

that's part of lovecraft's legacy... his mythology is so complete that it seems like it must have been invented by some ancient culture... cool stuff, eh?

acctually, the was largely inspired by the culture and myths of ancient mesopotamia, check dagon for instance, there are even references to other beings from the cthulhu mythos (similar characteristic in some cases even names are much alike)

oh, definitely. but he took from so many sources (though you're right--largely from Assyro-Babylonian mythology) and changed enough about the source material (particularly physical aspects of creatures, gods, etc.) that he really created his own mini/multiverse. the same goes for pretty much anyone that builds a world around their stories. Tolkien drew mostly from Norse and Old English mythology, Lewis from the Bible, Blake from Milton, Milton from the Bible and various non-canonical sources, Pratchett's discworld draws from Hinduism and other places, and so on. It takes centuries to get a real mythology going, but if you look closely at the big religions, they still share dozens of stories (I mean, what religion *doesn't* have a flood story?)

wow somebody who acctually read variuos artist hahaha it was a pleasure to read this comment and i can only say that i can't agree more with you on this topic (if anything than definetly on the flood story element). but not to go to far off topic (i should commmen the pic after all haha) i think it is great, and very original on top of it, starting of the colours which are mostly greenish in most other artistic representations of the great Cthulhu (as a matter of fact, most ancient ones and outer god i saw were represented using such colour palletes, and this is realy a pleasent new way to see his image)
