Description Life's finally slowing down and giving me a chance to get back on track. All my Christmas shopping is done, except for my parents' gifts. Though since they're 2,000 miles away. . .shopping for them consists of sending my brother a check for half of whatever he bought costs. I miss when it was the other way around. I still have Christmas cards to mail out too, but that won't take long.

Anyway I finally got around to finishing this piece for Karl's Kids Program, Inc. I know she wants to show what we have to the person in charge of the Call of the Wild program on Monday and I wanted to have the colored piece completed by then. I succeeded.

Again, Buck's design and coloring was interpreted from the following quote from the book:

"But for the stray brown on his muzzle and above his eyes, and for the splash of white hair that ran midmost down his chest, he might well have been mistaken for a gigantic wolf, larger than the largest of the breed. From his St. Bernard father he had inherited size and weight, but it was his shepherd mother who had given shape to that size and weight. His muzzle was the long wolf muzzle, save that it was larger than the muzzle of any wolf; and his head, somewhat broader, was the wolf head on a massive scale."

After I start and finish my 3-dog cartoon commission, I'll actually be doing another illustration for this Karl's Kids project. I'm thinking I might do Buck and Spitz for the second one. We'll see.

Anyways, as always, crits are welcome.

Buck is (c) Jack London
Art is (c) Karl's Kids Program, Inc. and Dancing Cavy Productions

Wow, that's my favorite book. I like how the colors blend together to make hues and shades; it looks great. I especially like your take on Buck; everytime I've seen a film portrayal of Buck, he's always a St. Bernard, but you seemed to have nailed London's description. This is a really nice picture

Thanks! Our group had a lengthy discussion of Buck's appearence before we decided on this version. We were trying to be as faithful to the book as possible but since the descriptions of Buck are limited, that was a bit tough to do!

Not bad. I would have suggested putting a little bit of warmer colors in the snow... the background is almost overwhelmingly cool-colored. Nice colored pencil work, as usual.

Actually, there is a bit of a cream/yellow tint to the snow near the foreground. But the scanner ate it. Grrrr.
