Description
Woo! It's finally done. This piece is a real shocker too. Why? I'm actually HAPPY with it and it has a background that I didn't half-ass!!This piece was mainly to experiment and see if I could pull off a marker/colored pencil mixed media piece. I've used acrylics to do a wash and then used colored pencil on top before. But I hate the wait time so I used markers to do the same thing instead.
I had planned on doing a different subject for my experiment but remembered that I've been meaning to do this idea for a while. I wasn't sure I'd ever actually get to put it on paper if I didn't start now! Like most things I do, it didn't come out exactly like I'd planned but still, I am very pleased. Especially with the background. I knew I would ruin the piece if I didn't plan and spend time on the background after spending so much time on the figure. So I managed to convince myself to work up a nice background.
I have no idea what that crystal is. That's just how I envisioned it initially. The kanji on it means 'fire.' I chose it because I like fire (I'm not a pyro), kitsune traditionally use foxfire, and fire is my element. There is no significance to the number of tails she has. I just wanted to do more than 2 and 3 fit nicely.
Medium: Marker 'wash' and colored pencil
Crits always welcome. Just because I'm happy with it doesn't mean it's perfect (and I know there are mistakes).

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and you did a fantastic job at doing that. You really gave him a mischievous look, like you know he's up to something.

Wow! This is really good for colored pencil. I would never be able to get that great of detail on the fur with my colored pencils. I think you shoudl do a tutorial on how you draw fur with colored pencils. I would appreciate it, and it might even inspire me to do some traditional work instead of always doing digital work.
I can kinda see how the left eye you wanted to make it look like it was squinting, but you shoudl have made it wider so that it was same width as the right eye, but thinner. That fur just amazes me!

Thank you. I don't know that my technique for colored pencil art is the best one to use. It involves many many lines. LOL. Very carpal tunnel-inducing. If I get a change, I can try to do a tut though.

i can't believe you drew that ball and didn't know why. that's awesome, kitsune were known to have star balls were they kept their memories and such. If you had the ball, you had control of the kitsune. so it was awesome that you drew that with it. good job!

A star ball is a kitsune's favorite toy X3. Normally a certain amount of power is put into the orb. It is said that a kitsune can be controlled and is forced to do what someone tells them to do when in possession of its star ball. It is a fun thing and a bad thing at the same time. I am surprised that this legend has been lost for so long. X3 I loves my star ball XD

Ahh I was familiar with the orb/ball that kitsune often possess. I just didn't realize it was referred to as a star ball. You learn something new every day!

it's got a lovely coat, do you use layers for it's fur?????

It's a traditionally-done piece. So there are only two layers: marker and colored pencil.

It looks good. the eyes give him a conniving look... though the eyes aren't realistic, real fox eyes are smaller.

The reference photo I used had a fox with fairly large eyes.

Wow Jamie, this is really, really nice. My main crit is that his eyes are two different sizes and his left leg seems smaller and set farther in than his right leg.

Yeah, her eyes are a bit different in size but I tried to make it look like she was squinting a bit. Tried anyway. And yup, you caught the other big mistake with that left leg. Gah foreshortening. 'Tis evil. EVIL.
Thanks for the crit and the nice comments though. They are both appreciated.

Thanks! This is the first time I've combined the two in this way. I've done it for cartoony pieces before.
I'm glad you like it.
