Tap... tap... tap...

Oleander felt as if he were staring a hole into the bowl of soup before him. The kitchen was lit only by the dim light of the moon and it was difficult to make out the details of anything. His gaze fixated on the mess of coarsely chopped carrots and potatoes floating on the surface of his meal as he listened distantly to the drum of a claw against the table.

Tap... tap... tap...

"You don't want to eat?"

Oleander flinched, but he dared not look up. "I-I do. It's just that, Alma made cookies earlier for everyone and..."

The tapping seized. Oleander felt his breath hitch in his throat.

"Who said you could have those? You know they're bad for your health."

Oleander's voice descended into a meek whisper. "I know, mother. I'm sorry, it won't happen again." He lowered his head to the bowl of soup and took a carrot into his mouth, chewing it hastily. "Your food is the best."

Mother got out of her chair, moving to Oleander's side and kneeling at his height. "You know mommy works hard to give you everything here, Ollie. Everything I do is for your own good, whether or not you can see that. So listen to mommy, alright? No more cookies at the nook."

Oleander gave a jerky nod and continued eating his soup. Mother smiled warmly.

"Now you finish everything in that bowl and head straight to bed. Don't let me catch you up late again or you know what will happen." Mother kissed Oleander tenderly on the forehead and then stood up. "Good night, Ollie. Love you," she said, then gracefully took her leave.

Oleander swallowed, raising his head to look out the window once she'd stepped out of the room.

"Love you too."
