Mary, Dawn, and Megan looked around, disoriented. They were in some sort of stone chamber. Not only was it windowless, there didn't appear to be any discernible doorway, either. There were shelves full of ancient-looking books, and others with various vials and artifacts. It looked like the lair of some kind of storybook witch or wizard. Was Ms. Featherstone...?

The girls' eyes quickly landed on their principal. The long black hair that surrounded them moments ago piled at Ms. Featherstone's feet. It was at least twice as long as she was tall. How had it appeared to grow so quickly? What was going on?

"I know you have a lot of questions," Ms. Featherstone began. "And it will help you to believe the answers better if I show you as well as tell." She smiled as she lifted up a small hair clip. As she gathered a section of her hair up and clipped it in place, the whole mass of sleek black tresses began to move again. It seemed to recoil back into itself, getting shorter. As it raised off the floor, it slowed until it stopped moving, hanging down to about her knees.

"Compact clip." Ms. Featherstone answered their unspoken question. "Keeps all my hair from dragging on the floor. A handy little doodad, if I do say so."

Mary was the first to regain her ability to speak. She stammered. "Ms. Featherstone, what just happened? How did we get here? Where IS here? What's going on?" She seemed somewhat frightened.

"A simple portal spell," replied the principal. "This is a safe place where we can speak freely and maybe do a little magic. In fact, it is imperative that you learn everything I have to teach you. But first, a confession."

The girls looked at each other, then back to Ms. Featherstone, expectantly.

"I've been using the three of you for years. Well, more specifically, your hair."

Dawn examined a lock of her curly hair. It seemed normal to her..."Using our hair? For what? I don't understand!"

"Well, it's time you learned about your magic hair. You'll need to know, or our world may soon end..."
