Thank you very much for the constructive criticism, it's a rare occurance on here- my problem was i started with the hand; without any fluidity. The pose was taken with the subject leaning back slightly, edged towards the left with his left arm raised slightly and i think this could have thrown off any anatomical sense.

Theres no harm going back into it without the model! Because the great tone effects that can be achieved with charcoal, its my opinion that we often loose our sense for the value of the process and its experience, because were surprised by the results, not only for the value of the work, but for your experience go into again!
remove the water mark so we can see too.(!)

This is amazing. Very emotive. I almost feel like I can tell what he's thinking.

They have the greatest ability to connect with a viewer, as well as the artist themselves in a lot of cases.

thanks a lot, i was unsure with the smoke purely because of it's texture, but i wanted to give a decent enough expression.

Absolutely amazing! From the thumbnail I thought it was an interesting photo, but then I discovered it was pastels! The lines around the eyes and the hair of the beard have been treated so carefully, it really brings a lot of life into the portrait. And the relationship between the face and the smoke, and likewise the smoke and the background, is beautiful, to say the least.
I love it!
