Love the way you work. Great seeing these processes.
Specially like the pink blossoms in this one (sucka for pink blossom), the only thing that didn't seem quite right was the head angle. Seems a bit stiff for the overall pose.

this is VERY awesome. Its nice to see how you do it ! The sketch was so light on detail but you managed to paint all the detail in.
I liked the fuzzy collar , too bad she lost it . (if that was a fuzzy collar.)

...The title of this picture wouldn't have anything to do with the anima rpg, would it?
Very interesting process, by the way. I do like that you don't attach any explinations to your steps. Shows that illustration isn't just a 1-2-3 process, but kind of evolves and requires skill and instinct.

I have a question for ya Dan:
Do you ever feel like you lose the initial energy of the first gesture or sketch you do for a painting by the time your halfway into it (more or less)?

it happens. you think it happened with this pic?

Not so much. The left leg/hip seemed to have more language and power. The overall pose is very dynamic don't get me wrong. It just seems like the sketch had more life in it.
I really struggle with maintaining overall life and vibrance in my work from the sketch myself.

some of the outfit probably added to the movement from the initial scribble, but would have been really ugly, so i thought. heh

you certainly have a different way of working with photoshop... do you have any tutorials (they don't have to be yours) for that method of working?

This (the pic) is a new method of computer painting, and looks like something I wanna try on my own computer....but I don't understand what you did with your pic o_O
...so you didn't draw out any outlines until you were halfway done with the drawing?
...did you use any layer types (multiply, hard light, etc)
...did you lock transparency on a copied level to paint it, or did you just paint on different layers carefully, or paint on the same black layer? (see the second and third panel)
well, thank you for all the help with showing this picture, I will probably try this method in the future. ^_^

yeah, there's alot here ...a bit much to type up, but i'll give you a rough answer to your questions:
outlines: i don't always have a drawing or something concrete before i paint. this was one of those cases i worked more with the silhouette of the figure and painted in the details as i went along
layer types: one layer for bckground, one for various b/g elements, one for the figure, one for the weapon and sheath. normally i'm not so layer happy but this time i wanted it to be pretty refined. there are a few overlay and multiply layers for shadows and toning for areas on the water, tree blossoms, her skin, etc
layer transparency and all is fancy stuff i know nothing about, to be honest. those are all normal layers as you see them presented. the overlays and multiplies are all set and done with beforehand.

It's so interesting to see the process of an art piece. I learn so much just by looking at processes, and it kind of installs a new hope in me. I always think that it must be so incredibly hard to produce art like yours, and other experienced artists, but I with these I can really see how it's a step by step thing, and if you have the patience, knowledge, and time then you can truly create a beautiful piece of art.
Great job!
