i'd be curious to see your painting process

hakubaikou In reply to DanHowardArt [2008-04-07 07:04:34 +0000 UTC]

My process? Ha! It's very unorganized. :-P Okay, I'll post something sometime. See if I can dig out drafts of old pics or maybe try to save some process shots of future ones.

It's just cool because people do things in such varied orders, yeah? I've seen process shots of yours and yrindale's and a few other people. And none of them are alike. Which is great.

mine may look organised, but i'm really sloppy...least i feel as such. some pics may go straight background to forground , dark to light. others may have multiple background layers and progressively be altered alongside the characters till something feels cohesive almost like song arrangement maybe? i could just be a music nerd.... Anyways, it comes down to the picture, I suppose. More complicated pieces won't necessarily have a linear battle plan as, say, this Tifa pic which was straight formulaic as I mentioned.

ragnarpendon [2008-04-07 03:58:42 +0000 UTC]

just a question... how'd you get rid of (minimize?) the lineart at the end?

DanHowardArt In reply to ragnarpendon [2008-04-07 04:00:18 +0000 UTC]

hehe, paint right over it

ragnarpendon In reply to DanHowardArt [2008-04-09 06:36:09 +0000 UTC]

ahhhh... simple as that?

i have wasted oh so much time trying to figure out how to do that hehe

yup. opaque layer under the lines, then an opaque layer over the lines. no frills, no secrets.

Very cool process! I always wondered how you managed to include those reds in purples in most of your pieces so flawlessly! Do you by chance have any linearts that you don't want or need? I'm bored and I really like your actions poses.

DanHowardArt In reply to Jujii [2008-04-05 02:13:53 +0000 UTC]

hehe, sadly the linearts are usually saved over with the painting. the jpgs here are about all that's left.

Looks to me like you always paint on one layer. Do your paintings always look this good if/when you use real media?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to RedRoseAya [2008-04-05 00:36:41 +0000 UTC]

actually i hardly use one layer anymore. Tifa definitely had a few layers going on. There's usually painting under the lines and over the lines and one or 2 layers for multiply and overlay for the sake of toning and texture.

I love the way you use such colorful and exageratted tones. Apparently, they wouldn't mesh together, but in the end you come with a wonderful composition and colors.

But she still don't look like Tifa and AC still sucks

DanHowardArt In reply to rafaelventura [2008-04-04 16:11:23 +0000 UTC]

how is tifa supposed to look? or are people looking for a direct rip of the established style?

i like your paintings because your whole painting and drawing technique is awesome, but their faces and bodies (with a few exceptions) are all the same. "the black-haired girl", that i think is actually you yourself. it's like you use this model to dress it up again and again, now as Tifa.
but apart from that great work!

thisisedmund [2008-04-04 09:22:08 +0000 UTC]

the lighting on her face made her non-tifa-like.

ZephronScythe [2008-04-04 09:04:10 +0000 UTC]

Now, I've seen this a few other times before, but is it better to start off with the darkest tones first and work towards lighter ones?

It seems weird to me... I don't know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to ZephronScythe [2008-04-04 10:18:11 +0000 UTC]

it's how i learned to paint. there's no right or wrong. some people are more comfortable with light to dark. work the way you understand best

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZephronScythe In reply to DanHowardArt [2008-04-05 01:13:20 +0000 UTC]

Okay, cool.

I've just gone from never seeing it done that way to bam! Almost everyone doing it that way.

I'm used to using markers, so that wouldn't work for me it that medium, and I guess that I'm used to that process of coloring.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to ZephronScythe [2008-04-05 01:24:13 +0000 UTC]

markers and watercolours are for really refined artists though since you have little to no room for correction, so i envy you if anything i like having room to correct my numerous screw ups. heheh

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZephronScythe In reply to DanHowardArt [2008-04-05 01:32:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well, haven't done anything in marker in a good while.

Just steal some of Donovan's and play around with 'em. He's got like a box of Prismas.

Hey i'm beginner and this kind of "making of" is very intersting, thanks a lot.

You mention u use photoshop and painter, what you use them for? I mean what part you do on painter what part on PS ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to DivynRapass [2008-04-04 10:19:19 +0000 UTC]

painter was the quickie "fire" background and textures. photoshop was the drawing, tifa colours, and final adjustments.
