Description ARGHHHHHH

this is the 2nd time i'm writing this.. 1st time the browser crashed. BASTARD!!!

anyway this is now the condensed explanation of each step... urghhh

LARGE-ish FILE

1 - RAWSCAN of a page of SINBAD : Rogue of Mars #1. No touch-ups, no edits. it's a raw scan.
It's scanned in GREYSCALE mode.

2) - levelled out the lines.
Used this basic method -> [link] <-

3) - Converted file into CMYK mode for colour purposes.
Did my usual 'colour hold' thing, where i turn the main outlines black, and the inner lines a blue-grey.

4) - Painted the backgrounds.
I do this 1st to let me see how I'd colour up the characters.
Whatchu' see here is the backgrounds minus the lineart.

5) - Flats are added.
Along w/ the colour flats, details such as Pupils, tatts, scars etc are added.
NOTE: this is usually the longest process for me.

6) - Minor shades are added.
Gives me more of an idea of where the light's hitting the characters etc.

7) - Main Highights and more shades are added.
This basically defines where the direct light hits each character and helps shape them alot more.

8) - Red Tint and Glow are added on the characters
The tint is added to set the whole mood and atmosphere of Mars, as is also why the highlight glows are added.
Makes it Pop more i think.

9) - Final touches and it's Complete.
Basically added some shines on the metal areas aswell as add a minor skylight to add to the atmosphere.

so yeh, that's it. COMPLETE minus the dialogue.

Nice. After reading this, I've learned a few new handy details about color images and making crisp line art. Thanks for the lesson!

King-of-Not [2013-07-13 09:04:36 +0000 UTC]

I loved this comic, bought it too!

Frankly, early on in the comic I was almost burst to laughter. The wrecked ship on Mars...
I mean, it's a funny note how popular culture called Sinbad the "Greatest sailor" when most real sailors would consider him toxic waste, his tendancy to get side tracked to "Here there be tygers/Kraken" parts of the world, the ship is wrecked, he's the ONLY survivor then comes back rich, squanders it, and sets out again... Something not matched in fiction till Groo...

So the wrecked ship on MARS... It's "How did he manage THIS!?"

great tutorial, but i have a question for steps 7 and 8. For step 7,you added a gradient or something in the shades? And for step 8, how do i apply the tint? how should i set up the layer for it?

CLE2 [2007-10-16 15:14:40 +0000 UTC]

how do u do the color hold thing in step 3?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

theCHAMBA In reply to CLE2 [2007-10-19 09:28:00 +0000 UTC]

there's many ways to achieve that.
for me, what I often do is polygon lasso around all the lines i wanted coloured and then change the colour of the lines.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CLE2 In reply to theCHAMBA [2007-10-19 11:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Synicalsel [2007-07-17 05:49:27 +0000 UTC]

Very masterfully done! I just adore the red tint and glow. But how did you add the glow? Did you Gaussian Blur the shading layer? Or some other piece of magic? ;3

Centaur-dude reminds me of The Rock. 'Specially with the tats and body. Most awesome.

Hi Chamba, the 8th point is the one i were talking to you about at your blog.
Is that atmosphere what i would like to get on my drawings. I can guess how to get, but i really do not know how to do it. Are you using kinda multiplied layer on pshop or colour curve or what?
Iยดve seen that you also use sometimes to make sun glitter on bodies and i love that effect....
I hope you could show me "how to".

best regards, master Chamba!

theCHAMBA In reply to C3R3ALKILL3R [2007-06-01 22:47:17 +0000 UTC]

all the effects i get are though various layer settings, so yeh.. no colour curve usage.

angelsunbomb [2007-05-29 21:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, haha... the last page confused me, cause its so dark in the first panel, I couldn't tell that there was a man blowing the large conch. I had to relook at the whole thing to understand that was what going on. I wonder if its that dark because of my lap top, or you really can't see it... hopefully when the page is printed, you can, otherwise, that'd be confusing.

Wow, rambles. Otherwise, its REALLY awesome, I just wish that first panel was a bit lighter! ^_^ It was fun to look at.

theCHAMBA In reply to angelsunbomb [2007-05-30 03:04:06 +0000 UTC]

i'm hoping the soundeffect would be added.
but mainly i'd love it for the reader to take their time when reading each page.
but i think it really depends on how well this comes out in print.
i'm jst hoping for the best

theCHAMBA In reply to mrcontroversial [2007-03-21 12:54:13 +0000 UTC]

i don't have Photoshop open at the moment, but i think it's linear burn at a low opacity setting

my tint is actually part of my shade

1st up, I dig your work.
2nd up, is this your first comic, or do you have other complete stuff (by which I mean a whole book or section of a book)?
3rd up, is this one picked up by a publisher or are you still tryin'?

Just curious.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

theCHAMBA In reply to speedball0o [2007-03-16 08:26:45 +0000 UTC]

1) cheers
2) this is not my 1st actual comic i've ever done. the 1st real one was that fill-in issue of 10th muse i did late last year [should be out soonish i guess]
3) this is for a publisher, same one for 10th muse.
