So I said I'd probably never do one of these, this is as close as it's probably gonna get. Step by step, I've done my best to try and account for my actions on the hypothermia painting found here [link] <----

This is an awsome tutorial! Why did you put it in the scraps?

Anyhas, one little question:
Do you use guidelines when you draw your sketch?

DanHowardArt In reply to MyDoom111 [2007-01-15 17:45:03 +0000 UTC]

yeah the sketch is a lil cleaned up from what you saw.

Never quite realized that monitors made that much of a difference before, interesting to see the effect that had early on in the process.

n/m
there's nothing to use against me. noone's going to pick up techniques and suddenly be dawned with experience. it's gained through trial and error. and more power to those who can pick it up easy and grow beyond what i've accomplished. i hope it works in their benefit. i certainly have far to grow in what i do now and i'm thankful to be where i am, but will never begrudge someone with superior skills.

Oh one question: Any recommendations on blending high contrast areas like the red outer line outside the areas with reflected light/shadow with the areas of reflected light/shadow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to Butch007 [2007-01-12 05:32:54 +0000 UTC]

if it's the pants you're referring to, i did them in painter using the camel hair brush. blending isn't too hard if you control your pressure settings on your wacom.

I was actually talking about the skin areas where I guess the highest or "Brightest" areas like the center of the thigh.

Awesome. Digital painting fills me with fear...and while this did nothing to alleviate that, it's still nice to see how a master goes about it step by step.

This is insane. I love to see other artist's styles and techinques step by step. It's amazing to start with that intimidating white space and turning it into something so beautiful. Great stuff!!!

I figured out what the problem is with her hand/sword. You changed the angle of the grip and tsuba from steps 7 to 8, and it makes her hand look off-kilter.

Man, I need to learn how to paint like this. My attempts at shading always look so flat. I guess I really have to stop painting from the "real" skin color and start with the dark and work my way back up. It doesn't help that I don't have a great concept of shadows and lighting on the human figure. XP

keykeyx10000 [2007-01-11 23:38:54 +0000 UTC]

i love how you color completly differently from most people here--even me!
i noticed how you change the hue right away and start with colors like red.

this will be something for me to learn.

thankyou!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanHowardArt In reply to keykeyx10000 [2007-01-11 23:50:27 +0000 UTC]

well...some people start with an under painting and build on it. some know what colours they want and just place them right away.

it's partially why i didn't wanna make a tutorial is b/c i go about things a lil differently.

we need to see something different so we can get the chance to learn it..

See, this is gonna be a problem for me...
I have an LCD monitor now and I have nowhere to put a CRT close by to watch my colours... guess it's time for a new desk

depends on who you ask, but a majority seem to agree that a CRT is more accurate, colour wise.
