Great illustration, and nice process. I want to take this girl on a date.

interesting process, you choose the color of the shadows, or underlying color in the first step according to how warm you want the image to be?

for most characters i do a red underpainting since red blood is visible in almost all skin tones..sometimes i just do everything in red and mix up the colours from there.

Hmmm...undertones...I wonder if I should start all my later colored drawings that way too.

The second stage is very interesting; it's quite nice to see traditional painting techniques applied to digital. I think that that gives the piece a much more "fleshed-out" feeling.

pretty cool break down=] makes sense, my painting teacher use to always tell me paint dark to light and it'll make it pop more, good stuff here, thanks for reminding me=]

Beautiful colors and anatomy. her body shape is nice. great legs too, so realistic. im really impressed with how you added that pattern to the cloth and got it to look like its actually following the shape of the cloth. no idea how to do that. impressive.

Damn, it's nice to see someone actually draw anatomically correct, sexy women! Enough with all these barbie like stick-figures with grapefruits stuck on their chests!
Thanks you

this is good stuff! the first step (blocking in the entire character in red) is especially useful

Do you ever use layer or brush effects when painting? Like screen, multiply etc?? You're so talented! I wish I could do that!

DanHowardArt In reply to mark-kawaguchi [2009-03-07 19:56:25 +0000 UTC]
only for the textures you see, which are usually either overlay or soft light.

The way you draw women (realistically, with curves) makes your painting 70% sexier.

Undertone or underpainting. I mix in the colours from there

i have a slower , possibly unconventional way of painting and rendering. to each their own, really work in different ways till you find what works. that's always best.

Liamythesh In reply to DanHowardArt [2009-03-06 23:15:53 +0000 UTC]
You seem very easily able to get that whole effect of multiple colours in a single area really well.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DanHowardArt In reply to Liamythesh [2009-03-06 23:56:21 +0000 UTC]
the way i do it is start with the red under painting, then a greenish medium tone (building from dark to light here), then a pink or yellow/orange hilight...and lots of sampling.

When I see these kinds of walk-throughs and step-by-step processes, it really gives a better perspective and new appreciation for the artwork. It's a lovely job, and the textures on the skirt are so much more amazing now that we can see them up close. Great work!
