Description
I have a bouquet of lightcliques
of shattered sunrays
that shun thoseΒ
whose rose is not as rubicund
or whose cerulean is only slightly sea-green-stained.

This amazing poem inspired me so much that I couldn't rest until I had illustrated its first stanza. Be sure to read all of it, it's so worth your time.Β
Huge Thanks to:

did you draw that with a hard round brush?? amazing...it looks very natural. the same with her eyelashes and brows. I made a piece recently with a female with closed eyes as well and it took me hours... when I compare it with this I see that I still have a long way to go haha and you are welcome

Yes, I saw it, that hair must have been a pain for you to draw. Even with the best speckled brush I wouldn't have the courage for such a task. But let me share a secret with you: I've adopted the following process for painting hair - 1st I block in all the colors, usually just 2-3 for the mid-tone, shadows and lighter parts or if there are different tones, this gives me a good base and shape to work over; 2nd I paint over the hair strand and streaks with a speckled brush to get the rough shape of the texture; 3rd only then do I go over it with my round brush set to size - pen pressure and 100% opacity (if you put opacity to pen pressure it takes much longer and tires your hand a lot) and work on the details. The unfinished painting is done without the second step and it took ages; this one, however, I "cheated" with a special brush and it was much easier and quicker.

Actually my arm hurt a bit afterwards but I would hate myself if I just copy pasted it!
Oh, wow thanks so much for sharing all these tips with me...are you reffering to the speckled brush in the brush set? I must try this sometime...

Art requires some sacrifices! You know, when I first got my Intuos (after a Bamboo) there was this option to vary the sensitivity of the pressure and I changed it to less (i.e. press more) rather than more (which I wanted). If it hadn't been for my boyfriend who pointed out my mistake I would have ended up scratching my tablet and wasting all my pen tips on a single painting!
No problem! You should have seen the light bulb flashing by my head when I came across this algorithm! Actually he called it Hair brush in his preview, but I'm not sure how it was actually called in the downloaded pack. There aren't many brushes, you'll find it

oh, I guess I should adjust that as well... why haven't I ever thought of it! I remember wearing down a pen nib in just a few months and it should usually last a year or more! I think I found the brush... I will check it out when I have some spare time to draw after work tomorrow
again, thank you for helping me so much. you are so nice

Which tablet do you use?Β
I hope you find it as useful as I did. I'm eager to see some results.

My pieces are a bit stylished so I thought of making a more realistic one next using a photo as reference or something... Β I will try out your hair technique then!

Thank you very much for all the support and help!
Bleeding hearts hold a special place in my childhood memories and they fit the painting in more ways than one!

Oh? Care to tell me about them?

DanielaIvanova In reply to whimandwonder [2014-04-06 18:27:02 +0000 UTC]
Well, first of all the bleeding hearts are exactly the color I was looking for. They also fit very well in the space I'd left for them - I was looking for something hanging rather than sticking up. And they are indeed early spring flowers, it wouldn't have done to put poppies or something like that And finally, after I talked a little more with stargirl2791 she told me the poem was also influenced by her budding love so they helped to better reflect that aspect.Β
Thanks for the question!

That's awesome. But I actually meant more about how you said they have a special place in your childhood memories? I was hoping to hear more about your personal connection to them.

Oh, I see They were one of the plants my grandpa planted and every spring when they bloomed because of their peculiar shape I'd ask him why they looked that way. And each year he would tell me a little story. You can imagine the impression this left in a little girl's brain

*Saving as desktop wallpaper for next winter's grey melancholy days* I was slightly surprised as I haven't expected you to go with that sort of color palette with the final details (especially in the case of the heart cherries). I guess I half assumed the pallette would go something likeΒ April by Escume . But I think I do realize why you went with the fresh plant green and sweet nectar-ish red-pink. It really makes it look like the light makes the nature grow and come alive
And the little hearts look like something that would grow in the dream garden of your grandfather

DanielaIvanova In reply to greycrow [2014-04-05 21:08:10 +0000 UTC]
Well, I had some pink in the initial sketch so it was definitely an option from the start and bleeding hearts turned out to be a very lucky coincidence since the poem is also inspired by budding love so yeah...
Besides since the main colors are pastel and soft I really wanted some kind of punch to it.Β
Actually we did have such flowers in our garden when I was little. They looked fascinating to me. Here we call them woman's heart. It's my grandpa who grew them.Β

Yea...I guess the picture then would not be only fitting illustration for the first stanza of stargirls poem but also for the last stanza of yours

Never thought of it that way... I will give some thought to the idea of illustrating my poem, too, though.
