Meteors? My first thought was volcanic calderas, and the surrounding land flooded by melting ice, and was quite impressed by the rendition. Are the meteors part of the back history of Richardson's books?
It's missing a scale. I'm thinking about 1 inch is equal to about 157 miles, so an RF of 1:10,000,000 ?
