Description
I got a bunch of notes on how I made this photo: [link]And while you're at it: [link]
So I decided to make a tutorial. I don't know if it's useful. Let me know if you have some use for it...and if not, not.
Hit the download-button for fullsize. But beware, it's quite big.
Edit: HOLY CRAP!!! A DD?!
I should probably say something cool or inspirational in this moment, but my brain just went offline...
Thanks to all the comments and favs, I will come back to you, I promise. When I made this I didn't thought it had any use at all. Maybe I have to rethink my standarts...
If you use this tutorial, please send me a note. I would love to see your version and I would like to link it to the tutorial. But it's your choice of course.
Here are some examples of peoples who used it:

Really interesting tutorial, definitely not a waste and very helpful.
I always wanted to try out shooting water drops, but i don't have a flash yet.
Will on camera flash work ?
In version 2.0 you might wanna use the word "flash","flashgun" or "speedlight" instead of flashlight, a flashlight is a 'Taschenlampe' and that's no where near powerful enough and you might confuse some people
P.S. Where did you get the idea to do this ?

The internal flash will work, but it'll look less "spectacular".
The whole thing was a complete coincidence. I took a photo like this and after that I tried several weeks to figure out how I did it. Took me 4 weeks and a physics book.

Wonderful tutorial, everything is very easy when you read it.. But it's so hard to do this. I tried today, but the effects... ugh... Well, I will try again
Anyway, thank you for this

i love this tutorial, but i just can't seem to make it work D:
i've got the bowl filled to the brim, and my straw is insanely close to the water.
am i doing something wrong here? am i missing some crucial factor?
also; congrats on the DD!
π: 0 β©: 1
DanielHeydecke In reply to time--watch3r [2012-02-11 21:10:44 +0000 UTC]
Well, the tutorial isn't exactly "up to date" anymore. I stopped to use a straw. There was always the problem of air inside the straw and the water wasn't coming out in a constant flow, but rather it was shooting out and you couldn't really time it.
Right now I make a small "ramp" made out of duct tape. This way the water can run freely without any anoying air bubbles.
Guess I should make a V2.0 on this one...
Aside from that: Trying, trying, trying. I used normal ordinary water from the faucet. Some people may tell you that you have to use Glycerin, Milk, Glue, concrete, whatever to get it to work. I can only say that it works just fine with ordinary water as well.
But there are days when I simply can't get a single one. So even I sometimes give up in frustration.

Definitely a V.2 would be interesting, another technique i used today is that I used one of these sharp needles for medical test, for blood sucking, and am not sure whats its called, a blood needle? anyways its extremely sharp and narrow so the water drops i have are extremely small, but still it worked a couple of times but the droplet would instantly disappear, any tips?

DanielHeydecke In reply to M0NY11 [2013-04-07 19:37:27 +0000 UTC]
That's actually all there is to it. Even when I do it the drops usually last only for about 1 second, rarely for two seconds. I just position the camera so it focus the point where the drops hit the water (more or less) and then I start a crazy light-show.
Truth to be told: I haven't done these drops since quite some time now. I guess I should try it again some day to find some more infos.

So I'm in the right path phew, I expected you to say so, because this tutorial has been put loong ago.
anyway I just wanted to say that your photography is breath taking, i dont see many people achieving good results in macro and landscapes!! keep up the good work!

wow, i didn't even think about the straw like that!
it makes sense, though; next time i'll try out a nice duct tape ramp.
a V2.0 would be nice, but this one is already extremely helpful.
and i had heard of people making 'solutions' of different densities, but that's much too complicated for my brain D:
oh my! so i guess it all really just depends on if the water feels like floating or not, eh?

Yeah, something like that. After a shooting I usually say "the god of the sink was generous/not so generous today".

Wow this is amazing.
I never thought of doing this but now I'm entranced.
I must try it myself and plan on doing so soon.
Do you recommend having flash on or off?
& Can this be done no matter your camera?
π: 0 β©: 1
DanielHeydecke In reply to radiiance [2012-01-09 09:37:33 +0000 UTC]
You do need a flashlight. It's essential, because you need a really short shutterspeed. As for the camera: Any DSLR-camera will do. I'm not sure if Digicams can do photos like that.

radiiance In reply to DanielHeydecke [2012-01-21 02:43:54 +0000 UTC]
Aw that I didn't know about the DSLR's.
I have a digicam.
I'm still going to try so I'll let you know if it works out.
If not, I'll also tell you but probably considering saving for a DSLR and reasons to get one of my own.

This may be a dumb question, but I just don't see it from the photos; How do you keep water from going on the floor if you've got a board spanning the sink? Or do you just place towels on the floor?
π: 0 β©: 1
DanielHeydecke In reply to blacklacefigure [2011-10-14 20:07:17 +0000 UTC]
Basically: Yes. I use towels so the water goes right in the sink. What you can't see: The sink is in my basement and below the sink there is a drain. So I don't have to worry about the water at all.
π: 0 β©: 1
blacklacefigure In reply to DanielHeydecke [2011-10-24 23:53:56 +0000 UTC]
Aha! I could do that in my kitchen because the sink has a good sized lip so anything that went over the board would just go back in the sink, but all the other sinks in the house don't even have counters. And we've got wood floors so I don't think my mom would appreciate that lol
π: 0 β©: 1
DanielHeydecke In reply to blacklacefigure [2011-10-25 10:05:58 +0000 UTC]
For testing you can just put the bowl on a towel that hangs into the sink. That way the water is directed into the sink.
If you do it right there is way less water flying around than with regular gravity drops.
